Never allowed him to bat at 5 in tests when VVS was clearly the better batsman and Dada was struggling for runs. Under Ganguly, if VVS was allowed to bat at 5, he could so easily have scored another 5-6 100s and added 14-1500 runs to his overall tally.

As Outsider has already said, Dada didn't pick himself but the anchor did. Dada had to pick the rest 10. Simple. I bet given a choice Dada would name VVS ahead of him in tests. In ODIs, Ganguly was our 2nd best bat after Sachin till Dhoni and Kohli came. So he deserves a place undoubtedly.

He dithered on number 5. Named Vishwanath and VVS and when the anchor prodded "Ganguly bhi ho sakte hain", said "haan Ganguly bhi ho sakte hain". In the end he did leave it to the anchor who picked Dada with the argument that a 12th man will be picked and that will be VVS so naming Ganguly in the 11 will not be a problem. He didn't put himself first but named two other guys infront of him. We can all agree who is better between the three statistically but when you ask someone from that standard, you don't expect him to say he was not good enough.

In fact this site's creation was at least partly a result of having the freedom to criticize Ganguly. But I felt it was unfair in this instance to blame him based on the show I watched. I don't agree with a lot of his selections in both squads, but I felt it was unfair to criticize him for being a narcissist, based on the program I watched. In the English segment, I don't recall a discussion on captaincy, but it is possible I missed it. As a pure keeper he did rate Kirmani over Dhoni, but went with Dhoni because he wanted to play 5 bowlers. Another interesting thing was that Amarnath did not find a mention even in the contenders.

I created this thread going by the news article only. Though knowing how notorious Indian media is I should have double checked without creating such a telling OP.

Was a poorly drafted program. No discussion on contenders for spots, why X was chosen over Y, why Bedi, Pras and Chandra cannot be there etc. In the Aajtak video, Ganguly at one point to pick Bhajji even says I am going purely by numbers!

They dont have time to do that or may be edited out because of lack of time and advertisement slots. These programs are mostly useless. Too much superficial rubbish in them, nothing substantial.

Laxman - 8781 test runs with avg of 45.97 (17 centuries) Ganguly - 7212 runs with an avg of 42.17 (16 centuries) Almost identical stats. Please note, Ganguly played less test matches (21 less) than Laxman. Both are great players for India..but I would pick Ganguly due his amazing leadership skills in test matches. On a side note, Kohli is better than both of them though :agree:
