fitting in a 64 bit processor then m7 chip without increasing battery size yet increasing battery life is really impressive! and they fit it again in such small body and light weight phone trust me its very very impressive and needs tons of engineering time even if its minor upgrade

user interface cost does not include os costs. How can analysts who who breakup a phone and find out the price of each component know anything about software cost? there is a difference between designing+testing something and manufacturing something. They are not the same. Processor cost is again just the manufacturing cost, not the cost of designing it. As i said, i am not saying apple is not making big money but isuppli report is not giving you the entire picture.
Wouldn't they price their processor according to the expenditure of designing it? They will even be earning some profit even in that.

Apple does design, verification, testing and validation to make sure the new chip they want built is the one that will satisfy their specifications and will work with the other components they plan to put into their phones. They spend time and effort to do the design, verification, testing and validation. The chip is not yet manufactured yet. They will then hand over the work to some other company like ARM which builds these chips. This company will then hand it over to some fabrication plant in china which will build these chips. These companies have their own design, verification, testing and validation process. The price these final two companies charge is the one you can find out by opening up the phone and looking at the components, not what apple is charging you for its own effort.

A7 processor in iPhone 5S not revolutionary: Analyst NEW DELHI: While introducing iPhone 5S, Apple also introduced the A7, a new processor that powers the phone. This is a successor to the A6 chip found in iPhone 5 and offers almost two times more performance. The A7 is also the world's first 64-bit smartphone processor. While Apple talked how great its new processor is, an analyst told TOI that it is evolutionary and "not revolutionary". Apple, unlike companies like LG and Sony that use processors made by firms like Qualcomm and Nvidia, designs its own processors. "The A7 is a good step forward, but it's far from revolutionary," said Patrick Moorhead, president and principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, which offers technology consultancy to phone and PC companies. Moorhead is a veteran of PC industry and had earlier worked as a corporate vice president at AMD, a company that designs and manufacture processors for computers and tablets. Apple described the A7 as a processor that "brings 64-bit desktop-class architecture to a smartphone for the first time". But it looks like the marketing talk. For now the benefits of 64-bit architecture are not apparent, a sentiment echoed by Moorhead. He said, "64-bit adds absolutely nothing to the user experience in mobility because it would require more than 4GB of RAM." Apple doesn't publicize the amount of RAM in its phones. But iPhone 5 has 1GB RAM and iPhone 5S is not likely to have more than 2GB. The processors that have 32-bit architecture can't make use of more than 4GB RAM. That makes 64-bit processors useful in servers and high-end machines that require more RAM. However, in smartphones and tablets the tasks that require more than 2GB or 3GB RAM are yet to appear. Processors with 64-bit architecture can also have 64-bit registers that may boost performance. But this requires developers to write code and applications that can utilize the 64-bit hardware in a chip. For now iPhone 5S is the only iOS device with a 64-bit processor. Apps written solely for 64-bit processors will not work on other older iPhones and existing iPads and iPhone 5C. This is the reason why processors in iPhone 5S supports apps written for both 32-bit architecture as well as 64-bit architecture. Unless all iOS devices move to 64-bit processors, developers will mostly write 32-bit apps, making the 64-bit architecture useless in A7. The performance gains claimed by Apple are likely coming from the improved architecture in the the A7 and not because the A6 is a 32-bit processor while the A7 is the 64-bit processor. While we do not have many details about the A7 processor in iPhone 5S, it still looks to be a dual-core chip. Theoretically, a high-end quad-core processor like Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, which powers high-end phones like LG G2 and Xperia Ultra, should offer better performance than the A7. Products based on ARM Cortex-A53 and ARM Cortex-A57 are likely to make the 64-bit processors more commonplace in the world of smartphones by 2015. Moorhead also said that the M7, a companion core in the A7 that will control accelerometer, gyroscope and compass, was not a very unique concept. "The M7 isn't anything new, as others, like Qualcomm have had what is called a sensor hub," he said. The other big feature in the A7 that Apple highlighted was compatibility with OpenGL 3.0, which should help iOS developer write better looking games. On Android side, phones powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 800 are already OpenGL 3.0 compatible.

Apple is using the ARMv8 architecture in the 5S and this architecture supports 64-bit. The previous ARM instruction set was 20 years ago. The improved instruction set of ARMv8 will help power gains - it made no sense to be at 32-bit when the architecture supported 64-bit. In addition, turning to 64-bit when the processor supports is a smart move - expect Apple to slowly transition from 32 to 64-bit over the next 2-3 years "seamlessly". Also, cryptography, image and video apps WILL benefit even if Apple has just 1GB of RAM. That's all crap. The A7 is mighty impressive. Yes, more ram would have made it madness, but its quite bonkers even now what they've done with it. Trust me when I say this...(I'm a computer engineer from one of the top 5 computer engineering colleges.)

Chaos computer club breaks Apple touch id
The biometrics hacking team of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) has successfully bypassed the biometric security of Apple's TouchID using easy everyday means. A fingerprint of the phone user, photographed from a glass surface, was enough to create a fake finger that could unlock an iPhone 5s secured with TouchID. This demonstrates – again – that fingerprint biometrics is unsuitable as access control method and should be avoided. Apple had released the new iPhone with a fingerprint sensor that was supposedly much more secure than previous fingerprint technology. A lot of bogus speculation about the marvels of the new technology and how hard to defeat it supposedly is had dominated the international technology press for days. "In reality, Apple's sensor has just a higher resolution compared to the sensors so far. So we only needed to ramp up the resolution of our fake", said the hacker with the nickname Starbug, who performed the critical experiments that led to the successful circumvention of the fingerprint locking. "As we have said now for more than years, fingerprints should not be used to secure anything. You leave them everywhere, and it is far too easy to make fake fingers out of lifted prints." [1] "We hope that this finally puts to rest the illusions people have about fingerprint biometrics. It is plain stupid to use something that you can´t change and that you leave everywhere every day as a security token", said Frank Rieger, spokesperson of the CCC. Fingerprint biometrics in passports has been introduced in many countries despite the fact that by this global roll-out no security gain can be shown.:haha::haha: iPhone users should avoid protecting sensitive data with their precious biometric fingerprint not only because it can be easily faked, as demonstrated by the CCC team. Also, you can easily be forced to unlock your phone against your will when being arrested. Forcing you to give up your (hopefully long) passcode is much harder under most jurisdictions than just casually swiping your phone over your handcuffed hands. First, the fingerprint of the enrolled user is photographed with 2400 dpi resolution. The resulting image is then cleaned up, inverted and laser printed with 1200 dpi onto transparent sheet with a thick toner setting. Finally, pink latex milk or white woodglue is smeared into the pattern created by the toner onto the transparent sheet. After it cures, the thin latex sheet is lifted from the sheet, breathed on to make it a tiny bit moist and then placed onto the sensor to unlock the phone. This process has been used with minor refinements and variations against the vast majority of fingerprint sensors on the market.

So from a 4-digit (or no as 50% people don't use them) you now require - physical access to the phone, 2400 dpi resolution image of the fingerprint, 1200 dpi laser printer and transparent sheet, pint latex milk or white woodglue plus a lot of vella time; that's increasing security as far as I see.

Sure seems like totally plausible scenarios to me. As a matter of fact, it is something that happens to me often. I frequently get abducted and so far, my captors have also found it very hard to get the 4 digit passcode or the pattern-lock I used to secure my phone. In fact, even the threat of being shot or stabbed does not make me give them my passcode. Now, they can easily grab hold of my hand, swipe my phone and steal all the billions and billions of dollars of corporate and govt. secrets I have stored in my phone :WTF: Talk about missing the point... how many petty phone thieves will go to the extent of lifting your fingerprints of elevator buttons or restroom door knobs in the hope of faking your finger print your phone? Btw, Apple is either extremely smart (they deliberately introduced the finger print scanner just so as to provoke a whole host of tech geeks and generate a bunch of publicity for their products) or they got their timing horribly wrong (what with all the recent controversy over phone companies handing over users’ private information to govt. agencies. Will the newly acquired finger print info be part of the package too?)

^^ they got it horribly wrong. They cracked it with in a week or less. Also if you didnt know you can now make calls even if they phone is locked. you can international and local calls even if you phone is locked with IOS 7.

yes this is much much bigger issue security wise.. but wont it be fixed if u disable control center on lock screen?

Thats a hacker club & they just chose a high profile target... to be fair, they claim that the whole biometric industry is a sham
