First game in Pakistan. He was an unknown kid at that time. I think he scored 30-40 but was very impressive.

An article in India Today (Hindi version), soon after he along with Vinod Kambli had hit that world record partnetship in harris shield. Though I was very young at that time but somehow that article remained in mind. It was a small column in the bottom of the page, as a side story of some main article on cricket, which I obviously don't recall. I had first heard about Tendulkar when he and Kambli had a record breaking partnership in harris Sheild.I had also seen his interview with Tom Alter

1990 was first real sight and memory. The baby faced kid, looked around 14. The amazing running catch and the ton. The following years he started to really excite me. From around 1994 I had already started saying to all he was best batsman in the world and idolising him. 1996 was when world cup was when world first really started noticing sachin as amazing batsman and maybe the best

1987 or 88 (not sure)was when I first heard his name.

Now let me tell you about my first memory of SRT,There was a lot of Buzz about this 16 year old around 89-90 and these were the days of DoorDarshan telecasts....

The Pakistan series was telecast live on DD. Was my first viewing of Tendulkar. Had read some articles about him earlier when he was being considered for the '89 tour to West Indies a few months back, but was not taken because the selectors felt he would be out of depth. IIRC, he was in the preparation camp for the tour and when asked about how he felt facing up to Kapil, and he did not realize what the big fuss was about.

My first memory of him is his sixes against mushtaq and qadir, I remember cursing cheeka for wasting so many balls earlier while he was batting and blamed him for the loss.... there I think started my admiration or reverence for Sachin and also simultaneous cussing of batsman who played with him in 90's for not letting him win matches like shastri, raman,cheka, azhar, etc etc.... throughout 90's this guy was a beast, sorry guys if you have not watched him in 90's you will never realise why he is God....

Yeah heard about that later....Wasn't that the tour that put Manju on the map obviously followed by the Pak tour?Lol So I am not completely crazy when I have this random memory of Manju at one point of time being the best batsman in the squad even in the presence of Cheeka,Azhar,Shastri,Sidhu etc.-I am omitting Vengsarkar and Amarnath as they were pretty much on last legs . To be really honest despite being a part of the entire SRT journey(almost),unfortunately,Some incidents like him being hit by a young Waqar,His demolishing Qadir were things I got to watch only later in life. Despite that we all saw something special unfold right in front of our eyes and that is exactly why Sachin will mean a lot more to us than say someone who started watching him after 1996 or even 2003(no disrespect kids) when he was already a superstar or by 2003 God of cricket.

You are right, up until 93 I think manju was our best batsman, he used to score a lot of fifties.....

I remember one tri series in sharjah where he scored a fifty in every match... big deal back then, he used to take some 80 odd balls for it though

It was either 1995 Sharjah or 1996 Delhi smacking the lunkans for a ton. I remember being about 6 or 7 years old. One day I got home from school and to my surprise everyone had gathered in front of the TV. My dad, uncle and mom had taken off from work. Grandparents were there too. All staring at the TV screen and often jumping out of their seats. This is when I first saw Sachin - or understood his importance. I am pretty sure it was during the '96 world cup but it could have been 1995, I don't remember exactly. The shot that I still remember is a pull shot that bulleted to the boundary. The moment I became his fan was certainly the desert storm. After that, I would stay up all night to watch him play on international tours or call sick in school etc.

First memory is that he became the first overseas player ever for Yorkshire.

Yeah not quite sure what happened with amre though a likeable fellow a ton away in SA on debut and gets dropped as if we were producing tendulkars every year the early '90s..........

Amre eventually got dropped because we had Kambli first, and then Ganguly, Dravid and Laxman. So, no place in the middle order really.

Manju made his debut in 87 right after WC against WI in Kotla test match. But he got his nose broken by Winston Benjamin in first innings itself. Next he was heard of was in india 's disastrous tour of WI where we lost Dhoni-sqe 4-0. Though manjrekar had earned himself some reputation by hitting a century. But he established himself firmly during Pakistan tour where he hit more than 500 runs in 4 test matches and was impossible to be dislodged. After that tour in 90 he was being considered our no 1 batsman. However after that he was only moderate on next tours of NZ and Eng and wheels came off completely on Australia tour of 91. There were lot of expectations but failed miserably and lost permanent spot in team.

India would have still won that match had More not done a Misbah. We needed 5 off 4 balls with 3 wickets in hand and More got bowled attempting a paddle scoop. My blood still boils thinking of that.

That too when he had already hit 2 fours through similar shots. When I met More in 2003, I couldn't control and reminded him of those 2 fours and then bowled. Of course he didn't appreciate that much.

I saw that telecast on TV recently and is damn ridiculous by More.

Next ball, he gets bowled trying to look cute. Next ball, Prabhakar gets run out trying to convert a single into a double Now, we need 4 out of 2, and Srinath cannot manage to put bat to ball. And in the last ball, Srinath hoicks one, the fielder in the deep misses the catch, but Raju uncle gets run-out while attempting the third one. Hilarious end overall.
