Yoda-esque Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 deus ex machina is the weakness and the flaw in a story's climax much reviled by good writers everywhere. A way chosen by lazy and untalented writers to bring the story to a close. Read up more on the term and Aristotle's hatred of it in his book on Dramaturgy "Poetics". Some heavy stuff there
Prakat Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Some heavy stuff there Right? Who would have thought I would be teaching Detonator dramatics of all things.
Detonator Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 deus ex machina is the weakness and the flaw in a story's climax much reviled by good writers everywhere. A way chosen by lazy and untalented writers to bring the story to a close. Read up more on the term and Aristotle's hatred of it in his book on Dramaturgy "Poetics". Well, I did understood Aristotle's hatred towards "an unsolvable problem solved in a sudden unexpected way", but it doesn't work in a fiction that's closer to reality. In a fictitious perfect world (or in a black hole), his views are perfect. :--D. I was once against this concept, but if the connections in a story that went beyond, which things became incomprehensible, it does need a deus ex machina :winky: A well executed story will fit in this technique in a good way, and a badly written story like "1942: a love story" or "Pearl harbour", the concept would seem absurd.
Detonator Posted October 15, 2013 Posted October 15, 2013 Right? Who would have thought I would be teaching Detonator dramatics of all things. not "who", but "how I" .. That's a stock cliche-esque aesop :asleep:
