vvvslaxman Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 India's record overseas was not really great.. An odd win here and there. That's all we achieved even in our prime. No real domination anywhere. Even in SL we only drew or lost. I don't think this unit will take too long to get there.
putrevus Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Australia suffered heavy loss to England. They lost to New zealand as well.. managed to draw the series. Was Ponting still the captain in last Ashes in 2011 ? it was not this young side which Clarke has now. Don't under estimate NZ side under good seaming conditions they will be more than handful like Aussies found on that Hobart pitch.

And also you just have to compare their performance everywhere with current performance. Australia was a gun team in every country . India was not really a gun team anytime abroad.

deathmonger Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I am not really sure if they are in that transition 'period'. More of a permanent decline than a transition imo.
vvvslaxman Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 yeah but we were winning at least a test in every series away and didn't lose heaps of test matches' date='actually mostly just lost 1 tests in each series barring nzl 2002,windies 2002[/quote'] It is not hard to replicate what they achieved. Even a drawn series means progress.
putrevus Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 And also you just have to compare their performance everywhere with current performance. Australia was a gun team in every country . India was not really a gun team anytime abroad. thats what I said, it was harder for those Aussie and WI teams to live up to the expectations unlike Indians who were happy if somebody got 100 but team losing and winning was not on anyone's radar. What is the young Indian team has to live up to, they will pretty much smash everywhere body at home better than their previous teams and they don't have to scary good overseas to be applauded and given awards back at home. They just don't have to stink like 0-8 then they should be fine.
vvvslaxman Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 Still a team like Australia with great infrastructure, should have done a far better job. They just could not run into another Warne. With lack of spinners in the country players became vulnerable against spin. Even ordinary Australian side would put up a fight in India. India never whitewashes even ordinary sides in a 4 or 5 match series. India managed to absolutely thrash them in India . It only suggests they are still in transition mode.

In fact I expect Indian succeeding generations to do better and better till a plateau is reached. At least for home tests and ODIs this side seems far dominant than the previous team did.
adi B Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 It is not hard to replicate what they achieved. Even a drawn series means progress. disagree with the 1st part.agree with the 2nd part. in the last decade i.e 2001-2011 whenever we toured abroad,we fans did believe and had confident that this team will be competitive and win matches and we did tbh, maybe we didn't win more than 1 tests per series in those away tours but we didn't lose too many as well (thnx to our batsmen mainly).. but now after the 8-0 debacle, whats the normal feeling amongst most of the fans? of course many are not feeling confident about our next away cycle, now most of us are beginning to feel that what we achieved in those away tours(even though nothing spectacular) from 2001-2011 was phenomenal...now the common feeling is,just escape a whitewash and win an odd test which is way different than how we were looking to the saf, england and aus tours in the last decade
saneindian Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 We will need to be patient with this young test side. Cant expect them to start winning overseas right away. Give them the time to establish themselves in Tests and they will get us the results. Unfortunately packed schedule with very little time to acclimatize is only going to make things a lot more tougher. Still this side will eventually become a very balanced test team in thenext 18-24 months
vvvslaxman Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 They may even be SA ready .. are they England ready. that is what i am curious. As a unit English unit is better than SA unit. Although as far as individual brilliance goes SA is much better.

Talents like Warne and Mcgrath don't come due systems ,they simply don't have talent now. They had whole generation of very good players like Hodge rotting away in FC that demoralizes parents from sending their kids to cricket.
vvvslaxman Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 I would always go into each and every competitive match to win draw away is still commendable. For the players if they have any less expectations shouldn't be in the squad to be honest. Public can expect whatever they want to - in fact this is driven more by our recent results. I am pretty sure everyone wants to win all the tests. But Ganguly started the trend of winning the first test and going for draws in the remaining and in the process losing one or two tests later.
vvvslaxman Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 How does ganguly come into this. For the record am happy we saw indian crickets better years during his captaincy. And also for the record dhoni seems to have started the trend of losing home and away and fighting with this own team. I suppose you did not follow his captaincy.. After every series taking the lead his defensive attitude allowed the opposition to come back. He went for draw with defensive field sets.

But Ganguly started the trend of winning the first test and going for draws in the remaining and in the process losing one or two tests later. home or away? coz in away matches iirc we mostly drew or lost the 1st match then bounce back..at home u are correct somewhat that under ganguly we used to sit back after winning the 1st test,it worked few times like 1-0 vs england 2001,didn't work against pak 2005 but barring these we also used to win more than a test eg 2-1 vs aus 2001,2-0 vs wi 2002,1-0 vs saf 2004 where we won the decider..

In West Indies we won the first test.. only to lose last 2 and lost series. Then in SA won first test and conceded the lead, In Australia we won 2nd test then we allowed them to come back in 3rd test.

vvvslaxman Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 partially agree but hey those tactics could have been used last year vs england where we would have nicked a 1-0 India sent an under-strength team for one thing. One that were there missed out cricket in West Indies. They lacked match practice. Collective slump in form and unsettled side (Gambhir/Viru joined late.. Then Gambhir injured. Sachin injured in one test, He was absent in one test Yuvraj injured in between) Above all we carried one of the absolute rubbish bowling unit against possibly the Best England side in 20 years of time. Absolute lack of preparation. No such excuses for Australian tour though. Tow horrendous tours.
