Dhawan Vijay Pujara Kohli Sharma Jadeja Ashwin *+ Dhoni Bhuvi Shami Yadav would be my playing XI. Rahane, Rayudu, Zak, Pandey/Pankaj would be my back ups.
Interesting, 2 spinners in playing xi in wanderers & durban. Fast bowlers wins you in SA, I would have only ashwin in the xi.

Interesting' date=' 2 spinners in playing xi in wanderers & durban. Fast bowlers wins you in SA, I would have only ashwin in the xi.[/quote'] 3 pacers going all out and bowling in short bursts, and 2 spinners helping them out with longish spells. Ashwin may or may not be v effective against right handers, Jadeja has a better chance with his 'natural variations' (as shane warne says). Basically I would like India to be in the game when it's bowling at all times. The above line up probably gives us that chance. And I don't think we'd be losing too much in batting by not having a specialist bat at #6 (who will anyways be a rookie), with Jadeja, Ashwin and Dhoni in the lower middle order. I feel our best chance is to be 'in the game' for as long as possible, which means keeping at it when bowling against the very strong SA batting line up. We don't have the team to score 500+ runs and beat SA by the weight of runs. Probably aim for 300-350 both while batting and bowling and not let the game drift away.

Avg 1st innings total at durban is around 250. Scoring against seamers will be tough for batsman from both sides. If we play 2 spinners they can attack and get some easy runs that means 1 of them will be underbowled during the course of the match.

Fair enough. I didn't pick the team keeping in mind the venues. Whenever I think of SA, I dread Smith, Amls, Kallis and ABDV piling on the runs,, so i wanted 5 bowling options without compromising too much on batting. If it's bowling friendly pitches, 4 bowlers is obviously the best option.

Would love to have Aaron' date=' but he hasn't played any FC cricket for 2 years and is still injured.[/quote'] He is not injured. He has just come back and is playing for Jharkhand. Took 7 wickets in last round of Ranji match.

ohh I missed that. That is super awesome news!! He MUST BE picked immediately if he hasn't lost his pace. Are there any videos of that match available?

No videos. He should not be rushed, needs to play more FC games and ready by NZ ODIs once he proves a long term-fitness and is bowling as well he was before when he played for India. He wont be bowling at his quickest straightaway , should buildup his pace gradually.

It will only result in them cutting down on their pace. He's played 2 matches and IMO if his pace is the same as it was before injuries struck him, he should be on the flight to SA.

It will take him few matches, few generous overs to turn up the heat and Ranji matches will provide him that. Playing these Ranji matches will also assure people of his fitness before he comes back. He should only be starting from T20 or ODIs rather than tests. We have better test bowlers than him, anyway.

^ The serious spinal chord injury aaron had it will be difficult for him to make comeback in tests. Reminds me of ryan harris who plays 2 tests then breaks down though their injuries are different. Aaron shld only be played odi's & t20 for atleast a year, let him recover back fully then can join the test team.
