coffee_rules
Dance bars nahin toh dandiya sahi By: Mamta Sen October 15, 2007 40,000 jobless bargirls make the most of Navratri; mint money by escorting single men to the festivities DANDIYA MARCH: Bar girls are being paid up to Rs 15,000 a night during Navratri. The figures are expected to go up. This picture has been used for representational purposes only The festive season has given jobless bargirls of the city reason to celebrate. Approximately 40,000 of them are using dandiya grounds on the nine nights of Navratri as an opportunity to do brisk business. According to Varsha Kale, president of Bar Girls Union, of the 75,000 bargirls in Mumbai, 35,000 have gone back to their homes in West Bengal to celebrate Durga puja and earn money through prostitution, while the remaining are planning to earn in the city during Navratri. Said Kale, “The girls have been offered Rs 15,000 a night and the figure is expected to go up once Navratri begins.” She added, “Being jobless has made many bargirls turn to prostitution for survival. Some have got offers from customers and are taking advance payments to get a makeover, so that they can pass off as upper class girls and attract customers.” Bargirls speak Kamla (25, name changed) from Malwani has taken an advance of Rs 5,000 for shopping and parlour expenses. She said, “This is the only time when we can make money. I took an advance because I don’t even have the money to go for a haircut. I make Rs 100 a day from bars these days.” Lekha (22), who like many bargirls, lives in a one-room hutment in Malwani, says, “I charge Rs 8,000 to 12,000 a night. The rates are negotiable if my services are used for all nine days.” She adds that dandiya grounds are the best place to look for customers, as many revellers are single men eager to have fun. She is on a strict diet of boiled vegetables and has been visiting the parlour since the last 15 days. Their entry into the dandiya fests is sponsored by their customers.
