As far as openers are concerned Gavaskar, Grame Smith, Greenidge, Haynes, Hayden and Anwar seem like the only candidates to me. I may be missing someone though. But i think its best to open with someone who is used to opening in this format of the game

You have to go by record books and amount of games played by the respective player when selecting a world XI. I like bond but he was injury prone and had a short career.

In a world XI a bowling alrounder is must. Sobers is my choice, worlds best ever alrounder.

Three fast bowlers have to be Marshall, Ambrose and McGrath. Spinner have to be Warne. One opener has to be Gavaskar. no 4 has be Sachin, One down Lara is must. For wicket keeping there is no option other than Gilchrist. Debate can be about 3 positions. 1. Second opener 2. Middle Order Bat 3 3. Middle Order Bat 4. For second opener I am inclined to take Greenidge. Middle Order Bat 3 would be Richards. Middle order bat 4 would be Kallis as he can roll his arms over for few overs. Otherwise it would have been Border or Ponting.

I was also giving serious thought to Gooch, stronger case than Haynes Id have thought.

Hmm... Not necessarily. Steyn, Akram both made my side, of your three I would only consider Marshall to replace either of those. Steyn right arm pace and outswing, Akram left arm pace bit of variety and the most skilled paceman with the old ball. Ive gone for a 5 man attack with Imran the allrounder and captain, Steyn, Akram and two spinners in Warne and Murali (surprisingly the only one to go two spinners I think, but think it gives my attack most balance) Hadlee is the other strong contender, in fact thinking about it I may take Hadlee in Steyns place and give the batting a bit more depth. I would take shewag over hayden anyday.Hayden has a equally average record away .The plus to viru is even though he struggled in Sa and eng ,He had some good match winning knocks like last when we toured durban his scores of 25,35 may seem less but in ocntext of low scoring match and being a opener it was important and same in the 2002 england tour he scored runs,I though he should not have gone half fit last time though.For me virus assaulton warne,mcgrath,gillespie in chennai and his assault on engliah attack of flintoff,harmy,anderson,swann are two of the best counterattack knocks u will ever see.
