So Who Said Our bowlers Suck?

Even with Kumble in the squad' date=' we could not polish off the tail at a Job'burg test in 97 despite having them at 95/7 at one stage. Bad weather and poor umpiring though played a bigger part in denying us a win then.[/quote'] Kumble was the leading wicket taker even in that innings and he would have won the game. Even in 2006 we took 5 wickets and took the tail out.

There's a reason why SA had Tahir in the squad. On Day 1 with those cracks around and a slightly drier surface' date=' general consensus was this pitch will break up on day 4 and 5. Pitch reports on each day kept emphasizing that. Commie also said the fear of the cracks being opened up stopped the teams from using the heavy roller in the first 3 days. Only after SA were confident that the pitch will not break up, did they start using the heavy roller.[/quote'] When you have that much of grass, it rarely helps spinners and it binds the pitch. There were cracks but because of the weather which has been overcast most times, it was far fetched. I said it when at the toss. We will need 4 seamers. Especially, now, after seeing, Ashwin is not really going to trouble them, they should revise their strategy.

Each commie on day one said they have never seen so many cracks on a Wanderer's pitch. The talk on Day 2 and 3 early morning was on this being an under prepared pitch which will become dangerous for batsmen due to variable bounce and multiple cracks on the good length spots.
yes.some balls were expected to misbehave like keep low or deviate sharply.they did. but it was never going to be like spinner running amok , kumble style, on fifth day SC dry gripping wicket.it does not work that way here as far I can remember.these are skiddy hard wickets.

Because it had lot more grass which binds the wicket.

If we had a good 4th pacer' date=' he would have taken wickets unlike Ashwin who never threatened anyone.[/quote'] Zak and Ishant did nothing all day too.only Shami looked threatening. also what does it say for our pace attack?if spinner doesn't take wickets,we can't defend 450 in these conditions? We have seen pacers go wicketless in India, yet spinners help bowl out team cheaply

you dont get it when you play 4 bowlers you just cannot have one guy not picking wickets unless you have some guy picking 10 wicket haul which is rare aganst good sides 4 bowlers are minimm and all of them need to contribute otherwise picking 20 wickets is hard even for guys like philander and steyn as we saw in this match

good point..and If we had 4th pacer, bowling changes would have been totally different in the first innings, SA might have scored 300+ ..:--D

Another thing is, this side only has those 4 bowlers. Earlier, Sachin, Sehwag, Ganguly all could bowl a bit if needed. In this team only Kohli bowls a little bit and that's it. So there is all the more pressure on the main bowlers to pick wickets.

better to have 4 pacers who can share workload, than have ashwin. jadeja or yadav in for ashwin and we have a good attack. Hate how ashwin's place seems guaranteed. Can't he be benched like in world t20 2012?

3 pacers did the job in first innings when ball was doing a bit more but pitch mostly flattens out on 4th and 5th day in SA. It is not India. So, you need all 4 bowlers to come to the party because once pacers bowl 20 plus overs in an innings, they are bound to tire out which blunts their potency too. No contribution from Ashwin in terms of wickets left us with virtually a 3-men attack. He never looked like taking a wicket. Wrt to Ishant and Zak, they are proven failures in such situations and can never be trusted to last or be impact bowlers two consecutive innings and this is not the first time, this happened. Same thing happened in Capetown 2010 as well.

Steyn,Philander,Morkel usually take 20 wickets between them actually.very rarely Kallis or spinner contributes in terms of wickets. This was just an off match for Steyn imo.we played him great too. Shami bowled great yesterday but Ishant and Zak didnt support him as well imo.If they did,we wouldn't have needed Ashwin anyway.

Lol point is they have Kallis to take over bowling when they are tired and he himself can get guys like bell and ponting:winky: Not to mention spinner also contributes with odd wicket and it's very rare for any bowler to go wicket less Just see Lyon making big contributions and how important they have been ..if there was even one all rounder I would have included ash win but right now if ashwin fails it's all upto 3 guys and one of them is very injury prone ...

Point to be noted there was no Kaillis to pick up the slack he did not bowl, it was essential a three bowlers that needed to pick up 20 wickets then, they picked 12. So in that case were Steyn and co out of steam and became ineffective in second innings due to the pitch or lack of steam since it was essentially a three man attack.

My point is that all guys dont have a good game at the same time.that applies to both batsmen and bowlers. So its upto guys having good game to stand up and win the game.I'm not defending Ashwin but given the conditions its not totally surprising he went wicketless. but yeah allrounder is needed too

Just read ur post You will see the problem right now with our line up we need all 3 guys to have good days Which rarely happens even for South Africa So you need at least 4 bowlers with wicket taking capabilities so that even if one has off day you have enough guys to cover and South Africa have Kallis for that ..right now for us it's 3 guys performing or nothing ..and if you know someone is going to be useless here why even play him ? We don't play 3 fast bowlers at home cos they will be useless why jot use same logic here ? Would not playing one of saint ,shami or zack at home be considered a bad decision even after good tour ? Nope it's picking players according to situation ..and we have been doing that at home for some time now ..

Both. On a fresh pitch, 3-men attack works but not when pitch flattens out and bowlers have to bowl more. Then it becomes for one bowler to run through so in that situation, it is essential that all bowlers pickup wickets. There is a reason, Aus team was so successful. All 4 bowlers could take wickets and that made them invincible.

We rarely play all spin attack in India either.one pacer is there atleast.such extreme one type attacks are rarely picked as captains go for balance. I didn't say we knew Ashwin would be useless, but it wasnt a surprise. It could have been Ashwin picking 2-3 wickets and Ishant going wicketless.ofcourse Ashwin should've done better but even without his contributions we had enough overs and runs to play with to get wickets

Yeah in India you get reverse swing and on turner we play 3 spinners But point is using ur logic should be don't drop any fast bower when we play at home on turner and go with just ashwin ? It's kind of similar of u ask me..we are getting green track here and ash win cannot pick a wicket on day 5 of test match ..sounds like we are going in with wrong type of bowler
