I live in Texas and we dont have equipments, roads, schools, houses to tackle snow conditions. Large majority people dont even have all wheel drive cars. I doubt if dealerships even sell them here.... Many Houston offices were closed because of ICEY conditions.. not even for snow. And we had several accidents despite of that..

I doubt if dealerships even sell them here.... Many Houston offices were closed because of ICEY conditions.. not even for snow. And we had several accidents despite of that.. I think this is a repeat of incident. They have done this before. School kids getting stuck at school. Also there were plenty of warnings about snow storm. All my friends in atlanta talk about suing the administration.

Chennai gets a 3 hour traffic jam when it drizzles. If it snows, nothing will move in the city for 2 days :giggle:

dial_100 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Temps in south fluctuate lot. So snow melts quickly and when temps drop again, it hardens into solid ice. Our bridges are full of ice formation in such conditions. We have tons of accidents on icy bridges. People driving with old flat tires and apply breaks the moment they see the ice, causing massive pile up every time we have these conditions. Solid ice prevents traction at the contact point. Its easy to laugh from up north on our condition here in south but most of our city machinery is not equipped to deal with snow/ice efficiently. The morning hour 7-8 is mostly when ice is very hard and thats the time parents drop kids to school. So for safety, schools are cancelled all across the state.
vvvslaxman Posted January 29, 2014 Author Posted January 29, 2014 Actually Atlant botched this one up. They had plenty of warnings about winter storm. We had one of the worst winter storms in 25 years this year. I am from midwest. They handled it pretty well. Not closing schools in advance was a mistake. Unlike schools, snow does not have scheduled time to arrive. They can start pelting from the middle of the day. If there was a forecast they should have declared it a holiday. These are administrative mistakes. Also leaving everyone at the same time was another mistake. Lack of equipments is also an issue. Same with Katrina right?

suraj Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Just talked to someone in Atlanta- stories are terrible. People stranded - some with infants and kids for hours and hours without food, drink, facilities and heat. Really pics look like the 1st episode of "the Walking Dead" with cars stranded!!! And all because of poor planning!! 18 hrs sitting in a car without any gas ( so no heat), no food, drinks etc and no sign of roads being cleared. Some hotels are renting space in lobbies since there are no rooms left!! Terrible terrible planning
