Not accepting tht without the deriding or insulting context, people occasionally do not mind certain words. . This is just your ignorance speaking. The word chink or chinki has horrible implecations. It is originally a racist term used by the British to discriminate chinese. Now considering that most north-east people are very averse to China, some of their ancestors were chased out of China, you can imagine what calling them by this name means to them People occasionally do not mind these words because they are constantly trying to fit in, not cause a scene or avoid a fight. That does not mean it is ok to paint an entire community by a derogatory term. For your information, it is also punishable by law. And abt ancestors being 'chased away' from china, I think only Arunachal(population of abt 1 million) have tibetan ancestry(??) out of north-east population of 40 million. You've - me telling you abt the Nickname 'chinki', - beetle telling you that she's got chinki features and never minds being called 'chinki', - me telling you if the context is deriding or insulting (for ex. calling an unknown north-easterner 'oye chinki idhar aa') , thats all rude and racist. Say we are discussing 'chinki features' here or with some NE-indian friend, thats NOT racist, different from say discussing 'n*gger features' . There's a student's hostel for NE students studying in DU near my house. Sometimes on interacting with them, they have asked me amusingly how people find their 'chinki features', 'little little eyes litte little nose etc lol' But yeah, you keep your usual self-righteous, preachy n hypocritical avatar on:two_thumbs_up:

But not all People from Uttarakhand look "chinki" My brother doesn't ...nor does my brother in law. My sister looks more like a himachali or punjabi woman.The three of us do have chinki eyes...though not small chinki eyes.

Sometimes we don't get it because we are not the target of the joke or ridicule.....like I used to enjoy "sardarji jokes " as a child .But now realize how they are pretty offensive .

Paki is a harmless shorthand version of Pakistani for many Americans or Aussies, but most Canadians n Britons do not use it. Likewise chinki is just used to refer to (person of) east-asian features for large %age of Indians many times in a context with no ill intent. As we have seen in this thread, people's self-righteousness(, their do-kaudi ke morals which they think are priceless, sorry to say) blocks their mind.

You don't use such words, that call out a person's differences, to be endearing to a stranger; the usage is pejorative most of the times. Has anybody ever heard of highlighting a stranger's differences to make them feel comfortable and welcome? That's not how you talk to strangers. This has nothing to do with words you use to describe your relatives or friends. Your friends and relatives already know your intent and context in which you are using the word, strangers do not.

We are saying this(murder) doesnt look like a hate crime on the face of it. Even though the start may have been racist, but the MLAs son called his frnds, got into a fight and broke the window. One cant compare it hate crimes like purposely entering gurdwara n killing sikhs like what happened in the US 1-2 yrs back. 4. Also, you got to admit, Indians(including from the NE) have this nickname, large %age of people use it for referring to (people of) east asian features without knowing the history of the word and the distaste tht 1 million arunachalis in particular have for it. If I had east-asian features, n someone innocently mentions abt my chinki features while conversing, am I gonna mind that? - Absolutely not.. Basically , it all depends on context.
