VIJAY KUMAR In filmy style, a special team of the Crime Branch CID of Tamil Nadu police on Wednesday air-dashed to West Bengal and apprehended the third suspect involved in the alleged sexual assault and murder of a TCS employee here. The team boarded the Chennai-Howrah Mail at Kharagpur Junction and cornered Ujan Mandal, in his twenties, in one of the coaches barely a couple of hours before the train reached its destination. “We have arrested Ujan Mandal who was involved in the case. On information that he boarded the Howrah Mail in Chennai on Monday, we rushed a team to Kolkata. Investigators drove back to Kharagpur, boarded the train and nabbed the accused,†Inspector-General of Police (CBCID) Mahesh Kumar Agarwal told The Hindu on Wednesday. He would be produced in a local court and brought to Chennai after obtaining a transit remand order, he said. Crucial evidence Meanwhile, investigators seized the knife used to commit the murder and some jewels belonging to the victim. Based on the information revealed by Utham Mandal and Ram Mandal, already arrested in the case, police also recovered an ear stud and a copper ring, police sources said. Explaining how the woman was intercepted and forced to a secluded area where the offence was committed, Mr. Agarwal said the suspects probably held her at knife-point, “It appears that they saw the woman walking alone and attacked her. Though the area is not isolated , the suspects took advantage of the darkness and late-night hour.†He said hours of painstaking investigation coupled with technical evidence helped the police zero in on the accused persons. Besides mobile phone calls and ATM footage, enquiries with local people were useful in identifying them. Investigators said swabs obtained from the body of the victim would be subjected to forensic analysis to confirm sexual assault. Based on the outcome of the tests, police would alter sections in the case.

Fact is rape and exploitation of women happens everywhere in India with alarming regularity, but there has been just one single case where the entire city stood against this garbage, albeit for a few months, and that was in Delhi.

CHennai is relatively safer place. Even this crime was not committed by locals. Even eveteasing completely stopped since Sarika's case. Considering it is the second largest IT City in India, it definitely caused some panic. Late shift, unprotected ATMs in remote places will have more attention from here on. I am 100% sure in chennai plans will be put in place to prevent such occurrences in future. Already they are going to strengthen the patrolling in the IT park area. Delhi .
Detonator Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 This is a sort of revenge rape. The girl humiliated the rapists by hitting them with shoes, a week before the incident for teasing her. She shld ve avoided walking at 11 , for her own safety.

Its not her fault but she should not have walked at 11 in the night alone. Unfortunately India is not safe enough. Mind you am not saying its the girl's fault but its always better to be careful.

Place where she is worked is in outskirts of chennai, IT Campus build on a highway road..it's impossible to locate people at night or help anyone.. Poor girl

I've myself walked down that path at late hours and yeah it is a risk to be walking there alone at night. If you haven't booked a cab by 4 pm then you have to place an ad hoc request and wait till a cab is allocated to you, and it might be 11:30 - 12 by the time you leave. It's a huge office with 20,000 people working and the perpetrators couldn't have known in advance that the target would be walking past alone at that hour. They were drunk and she happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, it's unfortunate.

Mind you am not saying its the girl's fault but its always better to be careful. She left earlier on that day so she didn't take the cab and went on her own. There is a speculation that she was not given any cab as she was leaving before the end of her shift.

Actually, I have heard that only about Delhi. Most cities in India are safe enough to walk at night. Such instances are very, very rare. Bangalore, chennai, Kolkata are in general very safe cities and I have known women who used to walk late at night

And they have teased her few days before. Atleast she shld ve walked with her frnds or collegues. she shldn't have taken a risk :(
