Another big tragedy happened in eastern part of Asia on the heels of MH 370 tragedy. Around 300 are suspected dead with most of them being high school students. Disgusting news emerged that Captain of the ship was in the first lot that left the ship once it started sinking. Some of very emotional sms's were sent by these students when this ship started sinking. None would tear your heart apart like this one which a boy sent to her mother. "Sending this in case I may not be able to say this again. Mom, I love you," one student Shin Young-Jin said in a text to his mother that was widely circulated in the South Korean media. "Oh, I love you too son," texted back his mother who was unaware at the time that her son was caught in a life and death struggle to escape the rapidly sinking vessel. Shin was eventually rescued. RIP all victims.

Ferry was just 20 kms away from shores and a distress signal was sent 2 hours before Ferry eventually sunk. I would think in today's time we have enough capabilities to evacuate 450 persons from a sinking ship in 2 hours time which is just few kms away from shore. 2. Ferry may have few survivors inside in air pockets. But it took more than 48 hours for divers to get inside the Ferry. I am not an expert in this area, but I would believe that that could have been done faster.

RIP all victims. South Korea has a very patriarchal culture - Trust me, I spent enough time in that part of the world to know. Basically, you don't ever question authority and simply do as you are told. The real culprits here are the ship management who told the passengers to stay put even though the ship was sinking.

He was the among first 6-7 people who left the ship where he was supposed to be doing his best to save all those kids. With right handling of situation a lot of lives could have been saved. There were around 40 life boats on the ship with each having capacity of 10-15 persons. That was enough to take care of all the passengers of that ferry. But apparently only one life boat was used to save people. Students were asked to stay put in their cabins where they eventually got buried. Captain of the ship instead of overseeing all these operations rushed to safety abandoning all those poor boys-girls behind. In another related news, Vice Principal of the school who was rescued from the ship has committed suicide by hanging himself. Guess, he would have found all this too much to bear.

I am not an expert in this area, but I would believe that that could have been done faster. Ferry actually capsized very fast. So ~80% (may be more) of ferry space, where people were, was already under water and people were trapped. Some people moved to that ~20% remaining space which was above water for 2 hours. Those people were rescued but rest of them who were trapped under water couldnt be. There were some videos of rescue efforts but yeah its a big tragedy. And as someone said the annoucement of 'Stay where you are' made matter worst.

Many times passengers have evacuated and many died, only to later find out that the ferry was completely fine and did not sink. In this case it was a bad call because of the angle of the ferry while sinking. Yet I don't think many could have been saved as people were completely stuck because of the angle of the ship
