AmreekanDesi Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Hey guys. Am a big fan of this forum and long time lurker. I know a lot of the posters here are expats in the US or based here. So I wanted some advice. I am in a college in PA and just finished my first year. However just becaus eI am Indian and brown I get picked on a lot and it is impossible to escape from the fun white Americans make of me. Some things i have had to put up with is: - Indian bobble head phenomena. Just for kiccks everyone on my floor bobbles my head and copies an Indian accent (which is an exaggeration) while talking to me. Random ppl call me Apu. -They say I smell of curry which is not possible as I have a meal plan and at Indian food maybe 10 times the whole yr -Girls dont talk to me ad think as if I am raj from Big bang theory. Alwys get surprised when they see i can talk. -They all think india is some poor, third world country where pretty much everyone is under the poverty line. I just counter it with the fact that we just became the 3rd largest economy in the world. There are many many others. I am like 5'10 but they still make fun of the indian physique and diet. Its been a hell this yr and I am seriously considering not coming back when I go home next december. any advice will be appreciated. dont suggest going to authorities and i already did that and they dismissed it as banter
EnterTheVoid Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I will be blunt: Harden the **** up. If these are the issues you had in college, you had it pretty easy.
AmreekanDesi Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 thats the easiest thing to say: Man up/harden up and the like.. and its okay if somebody does it once in a while but now whenever i get seen in public this starts and theres now way to escape it.
Bleed-Blue Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 The best way to deal with in my opinion is try And ignore it ( though not easy) if you continually ignore the people they will eventually give up and they will feel like what the point, of doing it because they are not achieving anything, even though it might effect you inside these guys are not getting the satisfaction they want which is a reaction from you. Remember this happens to many people, these issues occur naturally so don't feel like your alone. Just try and avoid these certain people. TBH I don't think these issues are that serious and you shouldn't let them affect you
AmreekanDesi Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 random question: do you guys generally hang out with indians in college abroad only.. the problem will go away/lessen if i just exclusively hang out with desi ppl but then it kinda takes away the whole point of going half way across the world if im living in a mini india.. im rooming with 2 indians and an american next semester.
AmreekanDesi Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 the lizard? :hysterical: what do you mean?
AmreekanDesi Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 ::hysterical: i am legit confused. whats the context?
KhanSaab Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I hate to say this but you might be better off staying in India for the time being. Try again as a graduate student when both you and your fellow students are more mature.
Old guy Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 I hate to say this but you might be better off staying in India for the time being. Try again as a graduate student when both you and your fellow students are more mature. then he will get bullied in india... just make some friends and survive :P
KhanSaab Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 then he will get bullied in india... just make some friends and survive :P Atleast he has his family to act as his support structure in India. Videsh mein akela par jayega bachha.
Old guy Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Atleast he has his family to act as his support structure in India. Videsh mein akela par jayega bachha. i think its very important to deal with this as coming to india ..my point was he is getting bullied not because he is indian its because some people jsut attract bulies more and its better he makes some friends there and learns to deal with it
SLICKR392 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 i am legit confused. whats the context? There an user on this site with a Lizard as his avatar/display pic, he was refering to him.
AmreekanDesi Posted May 27, 2014 Author Posted May 27, 2014 There an user on this site with a Lizard as his avatar/display pic' date=' he was refering to him.[/quote'] still doesnt make sense how it relates to this post. I know. wasnt he a mod? anyways good advice guys. def wouldnt agree aivbt getting bullied in india. ive been in delhi 18 years and this wouldnt have been such a shock if i had experienced this before. and prolly would have known how to react. i deffo think it comes under racism
flamy Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Oh so you went to US for undergrad. Interesting. I can honestly say I have not faced stuff like but maybe because I was in grad. Moreover, I don't really feel "different". No easy words for it. I don't see any difference between me and anyone I talk to when I'm with them. So, when a race-issue does come up, it takes me some time to figure out that I am the minority in the room :haha: I would just laugh at whatever they do, not be affected by it you know. Your self-worth comes from yourself. I have friends with whom I bring up the bobblehead for lulz. I actually correct them on the right and wrong way to do it. So, next time someone is doing the bobblehead, join them and teach them the right way to do it (any way you do it is right, because you are the boss!) Play up your desiness. You are exotic. Be proud of being an Indian. Wear nice, authentic Desi wear, footwear included. Wear a dhoti in the dorm :D I wore a lungi to Niagara Falls lol. Get Sandalwood essential oil and dab couple of drops on your neck. Whenever someone tells me I smell good, I say "well... I am Indian, so I tend to smell like that" (Sandalwood is from India). I guess it comes down to personality, but at the end man, it is just bullying. Ignore or make friends. Like ragging in India. Good luck.
rahulrulezz Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 I hope u r not trolling buddy cuz never in my life I have heard Indian students being bullied in NAmerican schools cuz of our race. As a matter of fact, I felt I got more respect from guys in my uni cuz I was Indian. We are bloody famous for being smart.. Talking about physical strength , go hit the gym. When ppl complain that gym takes too much time in Uni, it's BS. Only 45 mins a day. Stop surfing Icf or youtube. I was the only veggie Indian in my class but I was the champ of my class in arm wrestling competition. Prove every one wrong that not only we are bloody smart but we are effing strong as well Build respect by owning them both academically and stength wise
AmreekanDesi Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 lol why would i make this **** up... anyways its not like im saying it happens everywhere all the time. i think its just an issue with the people. there was a group of 5-6 american football players (all of them happened to be small town texas or southern cities) who started this. and as they were on my floor they are the ones i most comes across. they are pretty popular on the floor so the whole floor ends up joining them in.. i think for the rest its just a joke they join in and not something they would do voluntarily. incfact ive played video games and gone on lunches with the others. anyway next year im living in a different dorm where i wont see these 6 ppl as much. also my roommates will be mostly indians so they will have my back. im lalso planning to pledge and def workout a lot more. really looking forward. but i will admit there were times during the year esp. when it was like -15 degrees and all the snow and stuff which made it much worse for me and i was really depressed and wanted to run away to india..
