Marut
A King from Antigua deserves that title amongst ODI batsmen - to put it in context' date=' he averaged 47 at a 90+ SR in an era when a 30 avg and 55-60 SR was "good". And he had these stats despite falling off badly in the latter part of his career.[/quote'] One thing about the king from Antigua was that he never had to face his own bowlers, who were the best bowlers of the time. Almost every batsman who had to face the WI had their pride crushed and average and strike rates demolished. WI had six pace bowlers averaging in the thereabouts of 20 during the eighties, and Richards was lucky to never face them. But Sachin was unlucky not to face his own bowlers. Imagine what Sachin would have done to Indian bowlers who are record holders of many dubious bowling records!! Link to comment
thongale
Viv was very good against any pace bowler. Actually best ODI pace bowlers during his time were Imran, Wasim and Hadlee and Garner and Marshall in the mix. So he has played againt best of his era. He only struggled against Qadir, leaving the question how would have he fared on a era with Murali, Warne, Saqlain and Kumble. I am pretty sure former three are better than Qadir in ODIs. Muloghonto
Err, Qadir had an x-factor that doesnt necessarily lend itself to murali/saqlain/kumble: Qadir had the best (allegedly) googly and had two kinds of googlies ! So with Qadir, it was sometimes a matter of whether you could pick his googlies or not. If not, you are toast. Viv, unfortunately, couldnt pick Qadirs googlies very well, especially in the latter half of his career. Link to comment

Gollum
He will retire from tests after India series in August. Many people retire at the top of their game, don't know why this guy is retiring when he is getting better every passing day. He should aim to play for another 2-3 years and add 4-5k test runs. How is his retirement helping Lanka's cause? Link to comment

But when the decline came in 2011, it was quick and irreversible. Same thing happened to Ponting. Link to comment

If X factor was the real deal then Warne had it extensively, and Saqlain was absolute X factor till his doosra was worked out. Harbhajan once in twenty games gets in to that god mode at bowls thirty jaffas in one inning. Qadir was good against players whom cannot pick his googly. I can still remeber in 1993 how young Sanath Jayasuriya tore in to Qadir in Sharjah. X factor is highly overrated. Murali didn't have the X facor or the aura, but he is undoubted best ODI spinner has world ever seen. Link to comment

But even if he averages 45 per series, I would ask him to play a bit more just to mentor new players. Some times playign an experianced player is valuable in transsition periods. Thirimanne will move to 3 and Chandimal to 4. Mathews my stay at 5 or swap places with Chandimal. Given Kaushal Silva is pretty experianced, the test team will be in good hands. It's ODI team that is going to get hit bad when both Sanga and Dilshan retires together. Link to comment

Whats the yardstick for great players? I am not saying he is not best ODI spinner..because there are NO other contenders, but his overseas performance against top teams are not great. Link to comment
