Sachin=GOD Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Take out the fact that this guy is from SL and do the analysis of his stats rationally as a batsman alone. How many long series has he had chance to play overseas. Why are you combining his record as a keeper and batsman, keeping and scoring runs at no3 is just next to impossible. Lol....you just don't want to accept facts. He has played 31 tests in Aus, Eng, WI, SA and NZ -he has 6 hundreds at an average of 43 there. And if we look at the good bowling attacks there then he has done well only in Aus. In the subcontinent he has done very well against Pak while he averages 36 in India. So here also out of the two teams he has been average in India.
SLICKR392 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Take out the fact that this guy is from SL and do the analysis of his stats rationally as a batsman alone. How many long series has he had chance to play overseas. Why are you combining his record as a keeper and batsman, keeping and scoring runs at no3 is just next to impossible. If he is as good as his stats suggests, this guy should have a far better stats overseas, albeit the number of short or long series he's played before giving up his glove or otherwise. He's become a better player now. The pitch in this 1st test was nothing less than a Grand Prix track. Let's see how far he's come on a pitch with some juice. Yes, he missed out on the luxury of playing long series's overseas, similarily it can't be ignored the larger chunk of the runs and centuries have been scored in the SC. These facts of him not being good enough overseas, cause of the fact that he hasn't been given enough chances outside SC are just unproved theories, hypothetical; one can argue as much he wants to, but it does not change the numbers and fact that his insanely amazing average does no justice to his numbers overseas. In Sangakarra's case, not being able to bat enough outside SC is itself a paradox; he might have had better numbers or ended up averaging no where close to his current average of 60 or much worse.
SLICKR392 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 At a batsmen alone- I don't see why Kallis is rated above Sangakarra. I would rate Sanga over Kallis as a batsman alone. Although, it all comes down to the fact that Kallis is a bowling all rounder. That twists every batting stats between the two.

His averages as wk were fine for wk batsman and without gloves he has turned himself into mighty fine batsman. It is to his credit he averages 58 overall after over 50 tests as wk which is no mean feat in itself.

He is better than his stats suggest, try batting at no3 after squatting for two days behind stumps. No stat suggests him being not good as batsman as anyone else , he has been exceptional as batsman.

vvvslaxman Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 76% of Sanga's runs were scored in Asia. 79% of Mahela's runs were scored in Asia 74% of Jayasuriyas runs were scored in Asia For comparison Tendu 60% Dravid 55% Sunny 61% Javed 62% Sehwag who hasn't got consistent success outside Asia has 72% of runs in Asia. Don't think anyone has that kind of high percentage like Srilankans.
putrevus Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 And where all exactly did he score these chunk of runs after turning into a batting cyborg? He scored everywhere he played thats all you can ask from any player.
SLICKR392 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 He scored everywhere he played thats all you can ask from any player. Failed against England in a series in SL. And failed in SA. IIRC, those are after Prassana took up the keeping. He made 90% of them against Pakistan and Bangladesh. At home and Bangladesh/UAE.
TheWall Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Sanga is in a great form, but overtaking Lara is a big joke...

donks1 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 So great now we are analyzing series by series really. yeah this slickr guy lol
SLICKR392 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 So great now we are analyzing series by series really. That's the only overseas series he had, if I recall correctly. So, yeah, it's very much valid. The other one was in Australia, where he injured himself and missed out the rest of it.
SLICKR392 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 yeah this slickr guy lol I thought you and that joker Raavana were staying away from me?
Malcolm Merlyn Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Didn't other greats cash in against weak bowling attacks, it would not have mattered what bowling it was this guy is just too good . He might not be having average like in 70s but he might have been averaging in 60s. Scoring 29 hundreds in 70 tests with over 8200 runs purely as batsman is nothing but brilliant.unlike other overrated players from bigger teams this guy had least amount of chances to showcase his talent overseas as his team hardly played in longer series. We will never know how great he could have been had he just been a batsman thru out his career. 2500 runs vs Zim and Ban i doubt you will find that high percentage of runs againist minnows by any other great. Out of his 70 tests only 18 has come outside the SC and Sanga hasnt played a single completed series in Australia. He somehow always mysteriously gets injured when he is in Australia.

So now we are indulging in conspiracy theories . If you look at his technique, it is so simple and uncomplicated thats why I believe he would have succeeded in any conditions. Him playing only 18 tests outside subcontinent is question for Icc but not him in my view.,
Temujin Khaghan Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 sanga is atg no doubt. but overtaking lara is OTT. if he reaches 13K def will be recognized as a player in the same league as the wall, punter and the batsman kallis

I don't know why have you developed so much of affinity for him but he isn't in the league of a Sachin/Lara/Dravid/Ponting. Maybe Kallis to an extent as both have truck loads of runs but have somehow not scored against quality bowling.
