World Cup likely to be 10 teams

FIFA WC has 32 teams. FIBA basketball has 16 teams. BCCI, CA and ECB want cricket to be so insular? Why would you do that? You want more countries to play the sport, not become a niche sport where only 5 countries will end up playing. John Howard wouldn't have done this :haha: (That's a joke but seriously John wouldn't let that happen) The sport will die if it is so insular. I kind of wished England and Australia called BCCI's bluff but they wouldn't. ECB and BCCI are closer than anyone else. It is a shame but no one has the balls to challenge the three. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci-icc/content/story/754773.html

How many minnows are there in the other sports? A lot as experience gains strength. But to cut it down is madness part of trying to make the game insular.

other sports are shorter in time so competition is more. Also international matches outside WCs are very less in T20s we can have more teams but for ODIs 10 is okay

Watching FIFA i have started looking forward to ISL the footy league for India that Reliance is going to putforward..hopefully India improves from 150 odd to some 80 odd and competes.. But ICC WC should not be confused with FIFA wc, football is a game in which Iran could still hold Arg till 91st minute Messi magic, same thing with Ghana DE game..this can not happen in ICC WC its too tough for smaller nations. For cricket T20 is the way forward to globalize the game, you can expect afg to beat SA in t20 not in odi, no way in hell in a test. ODI and tests should be like golf elite based...the game gets diluted otherwise.

Is it so tough to understand Test,ODI - let the elites play with structured expansion, since it is not possible to have small teams play in this directly for some reason probably the complexity..cant imagine a indian golf team compete with USA/Europe right. T20 - promote world t20 to include more and more nations with bigger and bigger prize money and qualification tourneys

But one could argue about Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, they played a lot of ODIs, tour matches and stuff to become a test team. The ICC should make sure that they get more matches going for them rather than focusing on just trying to make money fom marquee series. Yes I know money is important but it shouldn't be 100% focus. The game needs to grow and going forward these three boards don't seem interested in it.

yes they should play lots of matches and tours but not in a WC :two_thumbs_up:

probably thats what is right...let ODI die outside of SC and test remain some marquee series based game that only some nations understand..say Ashes,Ind-Aus,Eng-Ind, SA against trio,WI/SL-Eng/Aus etc.. Let World t20 evolve and let it eventually become the ICC WC displacing the defunct ODI.

india with their billion plus population, have for the first time come into some power in a sport so they are trying their hardest not to lose control. can u imagine if a great power of the world like china ever take up the sport?

Oh boy they get strong. Gymnastics, Tennis (Women's), Swimming, Athletics, Diving and basically everything bar football and basketball really.

Right move. 50 over format makes it tough for associates to even compete. Rather make the t20 world cup an event with more teams where teams like Afghan, Nepal stand a chance.

Their best batsmen would bat 9 times because god made every person different but got tired by the time he got to China ! :giggle:

That will be a shame. Cricket really needs to grow outside the top 8 or 9. The associates are not getting pushed the way they should. Kenyan and Zimbabwean cricket have gone backward rather than forward. Cricket boards don't want to play a series with associates because there's no money in it. In the last World Cup, Netherlands nearly pulled off a great run chase against England. Then Ireland went ahead and did it. Both are promising sides but they don't get to play the top tier international sides often. People say having minnows in the World Cup dilutes the quality of the World Cup. Why don't we instead have these associates play the top 8 teams more often in the 4 years leading up to the World Cup so they've played enough top flight cricket to compete and even beat bigger international sides? The way it is now, cricket may never grow outside the top 9 teams.

This was supposed to happen in 2015 and has nothing to do with the big 3 taking over. This is ICC's greed that i was hoping the big 3 would stop but guess they just dont care one way or the other. All this goes back to 2007 WC. When India was eliminated early, the tv rights holder espn wanted ICC to reduce their fees. So ICC came up with the horrible 2011 format where India is mostly guaranteed to play atleast 7 games. But ICC wanted more. So they wanted to change 2015 world cup to 10 teams with each playing the other once, giving India atleast 9 games. But this was scrapped mostly thanks to BCCI.

The BCCI or the Indian government? If by India you mean BCCI: Yeah, the BCCI should focus on gaining control over football, tennis etc. You are right, just because they are a cricket board it doesn't mean that they have to administer only cricket. If by India you mean the Indian government: The government has no authority over BCCI, it is an autonomous body. BCCI having control over world cricket doesn't mean the Indian government wants to hold on to it. Doesn't make sense.

:finger: Hey look, we have a closed minded f'tard in this forum ... no better than those f'tard BCCI and co. What people like you fail to realize is that if cricket doesn't grow (test match is going to die out within a couple of years for sure) we will only have India, England and Australia playing it. Pakistan is already getting the stick and god knows if Srilanka will survive. Their board doesn't even pay their players properly. who in the world would want to work without pay? Let's not even talk about Bangladesh. The rest of the nations are not as cricket crazy as the big asian 4 plus Australia and England. Look at both Afganistan and Nepal, they have the hunger for it. If you take that away from them then why in the world would they even want to keep on trying? :finger: x infinite

Afghanistan and Ireland are two associate team that should play every world cup and get to compete with bigger teams more often at least in ODIs and T20s and let them play tests with smaller teams like BD, Zim, etc. BD, Zim, Ireland, Afghans can form their own test quartet of smaller nations of plate division.
