Philander penalised for ball tampering

Vernon Philander was fined 75% of his match fee after being found guilty of altering the condition of the ball during play on the third day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Friday (July 18). Billy Bowden and Richard Kettleborough, the on-field umpires, Nigel Llong, the third umpire, and Jeff Crowe, the match referee, laid the charge against Philander after the day’s play. Philander was then deemed to have breached the International Cricket Council’s code of conduct but, interestingly, there was no need for a hearing as Philander accepted the penalty levied by the match officials. The incident in question took place in the post-lunch session when television cameras caught Philander scratching the seam with his fingers and thumb. The footage, which wasn’t aired during live coverage, was viewed by the match officials after close of play. Penalties for such offences include a fine of 50% to 100% of the match fee or a ban of one Test or two One-Day Internationals, but this being Philander’s first such offence, only a fine was imposed.

Happened in the Pak series[/quote'] Actually Steyn couldn't do anything in the 1st test against pak,it was the second test where he destroyed them and faf got caught. Saf are tampering with the ball knowingly on dry pitches and its time some of their players got caught get banned for few matches and a strong message is sent out by the icc.

Yes, and it seems likely they started tampering after the bowlers couldn't click in the first test. Steyn would get reverse out of no where in the series against India too, after looking flat for a long time

Steyn didn't get caught and philander was wicket less : dontknow: philander should be fined for his inability to pick up wickets even with a tampered ball....anyways this means game ends in a dull draw.....result no longer likely as it looked.

Philander did his job he doesn't have to pick wickets but scratching the ball is enough. They dont want any publicity either so they just accept the fine and move on with win, 75% match fee fine is a joke.

Well i always felt indian bowlers are crap but we also suffer somewhat becoz we are horrible at the art of ball tampering. Some paki bowlers have got legendary status becoz of it, the english have also mastered it & saffers get caught doing it so naturally they do it a lot. The saffers don't care about being role models etc so they don't care about getting caught. Im sure the english do it a lot but they have barbie's father who doesn't allow the referes to do their jobs & it ever coming out live.

Before the start of the 31st over, television visuals of Faf du Plessis rubbing the ball near the zipper of his trouser pocket were broadcast. Reverse swing was noticeable from around 30 overs. David Warner all but accused South Africa of tampering in order to achieve the movement Australia could not manage. Warner hinted Australia would take it up with match officials. It was Warner, however, who was reported to the officials for breaching article 2.1.1 of the ICC's code of conduct which relates to public criticism and inappropriate comment. Like what Haysman said on twitter. "Legalise preparing the ball for reverse swing". For the love of god, give some leeway for the poor bowlers.They need that extra help to take wickets on flat tracks which is what you get pretty much all over the world these days.What would you rather see ? Tail enders scoring 50s or a fiery spell from Anderson/Steyn/Gul full of reverse swinging yorkers ?

What is this some leeway? Using nails, bottle openers, teeth or rubbing it on their a**h0l3s by putting it in your underwear! The current rules regarding ball tampering are just fine. There is already leeway to use spit and sweat. Nails etc. are going a bit farther. If you have a problem with the imbalance between bat/ball address the core issue - pitches. Don't try these quick fixes, won't help.

^^ Do tell boss,how do you expect to address the issue regarding pitches,especially in sub-continent where leaving grass does nothing to help bowlers after the first session or so.They have to bowl on a feather bed for the next 4 days.If a curator prepares a rank turner,dumb ICC issues sanctions like what happened to Galle in 2011.Apart from that there is the small matter of ticket sales which has stopped even Eng & Aus from providing bowler friendly conditions. It's high time for some radical changes.Expecting the cliched "sporting pitch" is just BS.

Huh? Sub-continent pitches can turn on end of day 3 onwards and we're fine. We don't need movement for fast bowlers. I don't see issue of "addressing the pitch" at Perth when the bowlers get exaggerated bounce. We will get the odd slow/low pitch but we shouldn't worry about the exceptions.
