Time to bring back Gambhir and rest Dhawan?

After the disastrous performance shown by Dhawan, i feel it's time to make him warm the benches of Gambhir and Gambhir should accompany along with Murali Vijay for steady opening partnership. I also believe it's useless to bring in Rohit Sharma for Binny.Ashwin, as a specialist spinner, must be back as he can bat and bowl as well. These two changes should be made in order to perform better and take the lead in the series for India

I would rather keep Dhawan as he seemed to improve in 2nd innings of last test... Will be good though if Gambhir can replace Rohit in middle order...He will surely play Moeen better than Rohit ...

And still go with 4 bowlers? When will we learn from our mistakes?

I dont know why people think getting him back is a good idea. He hasnt made a century in Test cricket in his last 47 test innings. Was pretty shaky in his tour games despite a 50. Last played a competitive FC game in February and failed to go past 20 in either innings. And by all evidence he is past it. To top it off he was never comfortable against swing and movement or the short ball which Finn's introduction will bring. He also averages 17.00 with the bat in England. When he was barely dealing with such conditions in his prime what is it to suggest he will do better now. In short, having him is a recipe for disaster. Need to look for the future than go back

agree, pokemon gambhir is not the answer. dhawan is also looking like a rabbit in the headlights so there is no obvious solution. maybe for the next 2 games only pujara should open.

There is not much difference between GG and dhawan at the moment. Either can be selected with hope rather than confidence. Now that dhawan has failed in first 3 tests, its normal to give GG a chance in rest of the 2 tests. Otherwise it does not make sense to pick GG in the first place.

i don't think reserves are just for injury case. if the first choice player does not perform, reserves must be tried. that is the norm with every other nation. unfortunately with dhoni at the top that has been the case for india for last few years. Looking at your post, it seems like fans have also been got used to dhoni's methods.

But there are so many other reasons why I want to see GG is given a chance in last 2 tests. 1) dhavan is repeating the same mistake in all 3 tests and there is no sign of improvement. it is not about runs, it is the way he looks clueless against moving ball. if he continues to play teh same way, it just a matter of 4 more nicks to keeper/slip. 2) GG averages 48 in last ranji season and most of the pitches he played were conducive to swing bowling. 3) GG has experience of 54 tests and averages 44. averaging 44 after 54 tests is by no means a easy task. his experience can prove to be critical to the result of this test series. 4) and the most important reason. if we pick dhavan for all 5 tests irrespective of his performance, it completely defeats the reason for picking GG in the squad.

Dhawan is bad but GG is as bad if not worse, why replace one bad guy with another?I would rather give Dhawan 2 more tests and hope he improves. If he doesnt replace him with a new player.Going back to GG without him showing any improvement is a backward step. As I said hes just in as a backup, same as Saha and now Ojha are backup to MSD

You are under estimating GG bro...he is way better batsman than Dhawan. No harm in giving chance atleast in 1 game.
