What a turnaround. Tomorrow he has to close the deal for India. Which makes me wonder: If we take out Ashwin from our bowling attack and how many of us actually feel India has even a chance of winning a test in SL (let alone a series)?

Very little chance, as per me. However, even with him, we'll have to see how many Tests we win on this tour. :giggle:

He better, else Mr. Rain may be willing to do it for the opposition.

:(( :(( :(( :(( :(( Sadly true. Its even more sadder to know that he ACTUALLY DELIVERED A INNINGS WIN for us last game fair and square. But....BCCI had other ideas. :(( :((

??? what do u mean? And infact one of the worrying things is the inability of this bowling attack (not just Ash, but incl Ashwin) to bowl out 2nd Inn (3rd or 4th of a Test) of opponents.

Got Chandimal out for less than 10 runs but umpire didn't give it. SL score at that time was 100-5. Howler. No DRS. Chandimal starts smashing things. Is streaky at first but gains in confidence and smashes us. Our phattu batting doesn't even chase a chaseable 175. We lose.

India would have won the first test by an innings if not for mediocre umpiring or BCCI's reluctance of adopting DRS.

Well, the BCCI and DRS certainly screwed us over but the bowlers lost the plot completely in lunch and tea sessions and then the batsmen had a collective brain fade... these can't be attributed to you-know-what.

With Mishra' date=' Ojha/Harbhajan and a fit Shami India may still win in Sri Lanka without Ashwin.[/quote'] Not with Bhajji... he's Punjab's 3rd or 4th best spinner, let alone in Ind. Perhaps, just perhaps we might have won Tests with Shami, P. Ojha, Mishra, pre-surgery Jaddu and Ishant/Yadav as our attack.

But that's no excuse for DRS screw up. DRS was a potential time bomb waiting to explode.

I don't quite agree. In the end, he will likely become a better bowler statistically than Mankad, but the latter played in a s**t team with no bowling support for the most part and had lots of catches dropped against him. I reckon that Mankad and Ashwin, in terms of ability, must be quite close in bowling terms. Batting wise, there's not much of a comparison. Poor Vinoo was shunted in the order quite a bit, but he averaged 41 as an opener, which was very good, even excellent in that era. Mankad was a very good batsman, much better than Ashwin, although stats again don't reveal the whole story.
I wrote this post a while back. Back then I didn't know Mankad was that good until you pointed out his stats in winning matches. Unreal !!! But still Ashwin is damn good.

Yes, my bad. I noticed only after I posted... thought about deleting it, but I left it since some others may learn and explore India's first world class allrounder (and 1 of only 2 thus far... Ash may join later).
