that still does not explain why India have a very good record at home and a terrible record away. Your point would make sense if India were **** everywhere. Its been more than a decade since Aus last won a test match in India. Just saying....

Totally unrelated stuff. Football is by far more popular in UK than cricket, but their national cricket team arguably is more accomplished than their football team isn't it? New Zealand has a tiny population and even then cricket isn't their favorite sport. Yet, they punch above their weights in this format. India having a good record is a combination of we knowing our conditions better than our opposition on a general basis. As simple as that. And again, that itself is crumbling - as demonstrated by a series loss to Englandm and lackluster wins over NZ and WI. The most satisfying home series we'd in ages would be the 4-0 whitewash of Australians - who were then ****.

Test cricket is taken seriously in Australia and England because it is a cultural thing and this format defines the historical relationship between these two countries. In India and Pakistan, test format never had traditional value we played tests just for the sake of it. Haar gaye to koi baat nahin, jeet gaye ya draw hua, theek hain. ODI World Cup is what Indian fans take very seriously.

Precisely, and that's why every freaking test series is taken as a "launching pad" for the next Ashes series. We took to ODI cricket because it was much shorter as compared to tests. And now we are preferring T20s because of same reason.

10 years ago, Ashwin would have been sent in to open with Murali, Kohli and Rahane batting positions swapped round, and Dhawan moved to No.6. The one thing missing from India in recent years is the ability to turn a match round. Unless they have a good first day, it tends to be game over. India have been almost down and out in many of India's away test wins.
