It's hard to judge batsman in this age of huge bats, easy pitches, small, grounds and crap bowlers. I wonder how AB de Villiers, Amla, Kohli, etc would have done in the 80s and 90s.

Actually I disagree. I have only heard this from most Pak fans and some Indian fans. Not even West Indians themselves consider him above Sachin though they do say he is an ODI great. So I do not think most neutrals put Viv ahead' date=' Aussie put Sachin ahead, mostly because he performed against them in ODIs. Anyways, this one is too close to call so I would be happy with either way[/quote'] Which West Indian doesn't consider him above Sachin? I truly put SRT over him since I haven't watched the man bat.

I don't think he is the best ever, but certainly among top 10. His figures are no joke. Averages above 50 in all countries except Bangladesh 27.66 and Australia 39.44. In Africa Average: 59 In Americas average: 80.4 In Asia average: 52.5 In Europe average: 56.5 In Oceania average: 46.66 This proves he can play in all conditions. He is at his best on really difficult pitches, because he still manages a big score at strike rate of 85+, but all other batsmen fail, so his team wins. On flat pitch he don't get the maximum out because he struggles with the big shots. He is a special player.

How does the failure of other batsman improve his performance?

Anyone with at least half a brain would pick Ponting to bat for their lives over Amla, Amla makes runs on home roads, and Ponting is barely fit to lick Vivs toe jam. And FTR ID take Gilchrist before Ponting. Viv only faced the best.
Ponting was not an opener, so they played different positions. After Viv Ponting is the best no3 player.

How does that matter? We're talking about the best ODI player, not the best opener.

We're talking about the best ODI player' date=' not the best opener.[/quote'] It matters because neither of them can be called as the best ODI player, so next selection would be based on batting spot. Amla has chance to be best opener but Ponting misses out for no3 spot to Viv who is not only all time best odi batsmen but best no3 also.

You mean Amla can beat Sachin?

Last time I checked you need two openers if Sachin takes one spot there still will be another spot open.
What the...? Last time I checked, Amla is one human being. If he takes one spot, there will still be another spot open. This is true for every human in the world...

My point is your statement made no sense...
your point makes no sense, his question was does Amla beat Sachin as best opener, well he does not have too since there are two openers any team. Sachin and Amla can both be best openers , well that is my view your view might differ if that is the case so be it.

The general definition of the best opener is one batsman who does well batting at the opening position, better than all of the other batsman batting at the same position.

Not in my book , since neither of them go down as best ODI player the next selection would be according to batting positions. Since there are two opening slots Sachin and Amla are not competing against each other.

How about Hayden and Gilchrist?

I'd open with Gilchrist over Amla, Gilchrists stats are skewed because he spent time batting at 6 in his early days iirc.
