Hoping everything goes as expected :nervous: Some selective extracts on what is expected to happen in the next few days: The satellite carries one large rocket motor and eight smaller thrusters. For most of its journey, the larger rocket motor has been idling, so the worry is will it function on demand and will it function efficiently? ISRO will test it in a short four-second burn and then embark on the future course of action. There are two parallel circuits to start up the larger rocket motor; ISRO will use these two paths sequentially as part of plan A and plan B. How can an outer space mission budget be compared to the cost of a car? :whatchutalkingabout The budget for MAVEN is approx. $671 million. The budget for MOM is only $74 million. At less than one-ninth the cost, India has definitely show-cased its prowess at handling low-cost inter-planetary missions. Not to do a comparison, but just to reinforce how small MOM's budget is, the budget for Gravity - the 91 minute movie, was $100 million.

Muloghonto Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 While it is indisputable that India's cost for launching an interplanetary mission is far less than that of the US ( Better work ethic, greater value per dollar aka PPP for India, lesser beurocratic spendings for NASA vs ISRO, etc), it is not really a 600 million dollar vs 75 million dollar project. The Maven carries far more sophisticated instruments and is a far more advanced satellite than the Mangalyaan. That is also indisputable. Its undersandable why India didntwant to put a super sophisticated satellite on its maiden voyage but if hte ISRO had made/launched the Maven, it'd have atleast doubled the cost of the project at the very least. Also, ISRO's cost savings come at a cost- a slower, more error prone mission. The Maven is more expensive because the rocket that took Maven to orbit is far more expensive. And it also offers far quicker service than ISRO's rocket. The rocket that carried Maven had lift-off and put it straight away into Martian path, directly escaping earth's trajectory. The ISRO rocket could not do that, it put us on a high orbit of earth, from where the Mangalyaan did several orbital raise manurvers to put it into a Martian trajectory. Doing complicated orbital changes in space is both complicated and error prone and this is why Maven was launched months later than Mangalyaan and arrived months early.
