I will also take Stuart Binny as my third seamer and include two spinners." Gavaskar explained why he left out Yadav and Ishant who have pace and have done well in test cricket in recent times, saying "Our current new ball bowlers will not be of any use if they don't get you a fifer or three to four wickets because they go for a lot of runs. I would much rather have a bowler who can bat a bit." "While naming my 15 for the World Cup, I had picked Mohit Sharma ahead of Ishant Sharma, mainly because Mohit is a better fielder." On the other hand Manjrekar during commentary said sth along these lines: We have had more success and out bowling culture supports medium pacers around 130km/h who can focus on line and length and keep a lid on runs and get the wickets through pressure. Blowing away the opposition through pace just isn't part of the Indian team historically. VS What Wasim said, ""In Australia, you need a bit of pace. I know Umesh has often been expensive but he is also the one who will get you wickets. Bhuvneshwar Kumar can swing the ball but he is too slow, bowling at 120-125 kmph. At that pace, it is easy for batsmen to negotiate any amount of swing. It will be Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav for me." Basically that there is no substitute for raw pace. Whose side are you on?

BlueBee Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Somewhere in between. Bhuvi, Shami and Ishant for me. Will swap Umesh with Ishant where there's a bit of swing, prolly in NZ. Bhuvi - Largely for his economical bowling and that he's a decent bat. Shami - Our best pacer in 2014. Ishant - Tall bowler, decent pace and he'll generate good bounce from the wickets.

Infact he was nicknamed the Wild Thing for being a spray gun. I rem Gilchrist once reflected in an interview that no one knew where the ball would end up but it was so fast that they were willing to take risk so it worked out. So every over there would be a wide, some byes but every so often he would land it in the right spot and get wickets. The rest of the bowlers were economical enough to cover for his run leaking. Aaron could have been and Yadav can be used in similar roles.
putrevus Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Sunny and Manju are a joke they are still stuck in 1970s. Yadav or Aaron should be able to bowl fast while being consistent. Give these youngsters continuous run and not dissect their performances every single match if they fail after getting continuous chances then it is on them. When Nohit can be given so many fricking chances , identify talented fast bowlers not trundlers and stick with them.Chopping and changing will not help anyone. Ishant is done and dusted he will never be a good bowler, need to look beyond him.I don't know why Aaron is not in the squad. Answer is not packing the team with trundlers like Bhuvi or Mohit in just because they bowl line and length.Unless there is swing, trundlers will be of no use, what is point in Binny and Bhuvi playing in the same eleven. Bhuvi should improve his batting and play in the team as an allrounder in these conditions and he needs to be given that chance if he fails with bat initially so be it.

Kalia_Test Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 In Tests, getting wickets will restrict scores ( as there are unlimited overs practically ) In ODIs, restricting runs is also ONE OF THE WAYS to get wickets and wickets are in general secondary ( primary objective is to restrict runs ). Further complexity is added when you need to look at team balance and who your best bowlers are ( pacers or spinners ). I will personally go for 2 genuine wicket taking pace bowlers ( Shami and Umesh/Ishant ) + Binny + Jadeja + Ashwin. Add Rohit and Raina and we can get through 50 overs. Very important factor to consider is that Dhoni is comfortable setting fields to spinners and big grounds will help too.

kosingh Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Something Wasim keeps bringing up- nobody talks to the indian pacers when they're bowling. Getting guidance from / having someone to run ideas by on the field is such an important part of a young bowler's development. Having said that, there aren't a lot of people in this team that can fill the role of standing at mid on/off and talk to bowlers. Kohli maybe, but he's an impatient/volatile/emotionally unstable sort of guy who may get carried away and give bad advice at times. "Saale ke naak par beamer maar"
