Former India batsmen VVS Laxman yesterday urged sports persons to aim big and not be content with small achievements and job security. The 40-year-old, who was addressing a gathering at the prize distribution ceremony of the 84th Annual Times Cricket Shield, said most players, including cricketers, in India fail to justify their potential because they are satisfied getting a good job or are happy will small achievements. "I got a job in Air India when I was 18. I know the importance of getting a good job but you should never get into a comfort zone. Never ever stop being a cricketer and stop improving just because you got a job," said Laxman, who was supposed to play a Times Shield match for Air India a couple of years before his retirement in 2012 but had to pull out due to a back injury. The Hyderabad batsman, who scored 17 centuries in his 134-match Test career, cited the examples of Amol Muzumdar and S Sriram. "In stead of having role models like (Sunil) Gavaskar or (Sachin) Tendulkar, young cricketers should look up to the likes of Muzumdar and Sriram who knew that they were not going to make it to the national team and yet gave their best at the domestic circuit," Laxman said. "There are thousands of players playing cricket in India and only a select few get to play for the country. But till the day you are playing the sport you should play with the same intensity as if you stand a chance to play for India," he added

I think this is called confirmation bias (The art of thinking clearly) or something. For example: We look at the profiles of people who make it to something like IAS and think any intelligent guy is destined to make it. But we dont look at a lot of gazillions of intelligent people who have been rejected. Amol Muzumdar did everything he could, all those training sessions, routines, net practice, kept fit (man looks like a cane stick) but still didn't make it. --- That aside, VVS Laxman has the talent to send people into depression mode when invited for a motivational speech :haha: giving a reality check is fine, but wtf seriously VVS? telling young people that life is a punishment, even when you do all things right :D
