MK55 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 To make it simpler, I am assuming Australia/New Zealand to be the top 2 teams of Group A. Sri Lanka and England will end up filling the remaining 2 spots Irelands’s win over West Indies and our victory over Pakistan have opened a realm of possibilities that are favorable to us. Some of the scenarios could be as follows Ideal case: SA losing only against India, India winning all (safe to assume if we are good enough to beat SA). Obviously we finish first Next best: SA winning all, India losing to only SA: Obviously we’ll be finishing second and will avoid facing Australia/New Zealand Now the bad scenarios: Scenario 1: SA win all, India lose to WI and SA, PAK win against WI(don’t see WI beating both India and PAK) => SA will end up winning 6, India and PAK will both end up with 4 wins and then run rate will determine the second spot (provided no more upsets by Ireland) Scenario 2: SA win all, India losing to both SA and Ireland (Upset :nervous:), India winning against WI => India will be competing with either PAK or both PAK and Ireland for the second spot. Run rate again important. Scenario 3: SA win all, India losing to both SA and Zimbabwe (Upset :nervous:), India winning against WI => India will have to compete with PAK for second spot or can straight away finish second if PAK loses to WI. Run rate again important. (provided no more Upsets by minnows) The thing is our win against PAK and Ireland’s win over WI has made it a lot easier for us to finish second. Even if we have an upset loss or lose to WI, we can still end up second if we have a decent run rate. In all likelihood we will be facing England/ Sri Lanka. Even an upset and SA loss cant stop us from finishing second :--D Updates: An unexpected event is occurring with WI beating PAK by a huge margin which would also correct their run rate after the Ireland loss. I don't see SA losing to PAK/WI. This has almost put PAK out of contention for the first 2 spots. The India/WI match has now become crucial if we don't manage to win against SA. A loss against WI would result in us fighting with WI for the second spot on run rate (or even Ireland if they cause another upset).

So that means Australia will need to beat NZ to be a chance of finishing top of the pool.

Now we could end getting knocked out by Aus,Eng ,SA or NZ . In the last 4 years , India has won just 6 matches away (or in neutral venues ) against Aus,Eng ,SA & NZ and LOST 16 .

WI are unpredictable and if the mercurial Gayle fires then there could be some danger if we play badly. As long as we have a decent run rate there wont be any issues finishing second despite some bad results.
