Simply put, given the RR was low all AB needed to stay there and make Pak work hard for their wickets. If it still fails then opposition gas been better Others can be blamed of same but AB is main guy

Also, Steyn is no mug with the bat. He has batted before in crunch situations in test cricket. ABDV could have talked to him and asked him to defend instead of playing shots. Steyn could have just blocked as he has a decent enough defense.

That lesser chance depends on the bowler-batsman combinations etc. It is not a given - here, I did not find much of a difference.
