Railways to float tenders to procure solar energy http://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/railways-to-float-tenders-to-procure-solar-energy-115062500633_1.html

Indian Railways will float tenders to procure at least 200 mega watt of solar energy in the next two months, a step which will promote use of non-conventional energy in its daily functioning. Union Minister of State for Railways Manoj Kumar Sinha said the Centre is presently working out details of the plan. The tender is part of Railways' plan to procure 1000 mega watt of solar energy over the next five years. "We have fixed a target of procuring 1000 mega watt solar power in the whole Indian Railways. We are working on it. We are going to float a tender for at least 200 mega watts in next two moths. We have plenty of rooftops available in Indian Railways (to install the panels)," he said. The Ministry has commissioned one mega watt solar power plant - the largest such project in the country till now - at Katra Railway station in Jammu and Kashmir on March 30 this year.

The first compartment of the train tilted upwards from the impact of collision with the buffers at the dead-end of the station, where suburban trains on the western line end. Five passengers were injured after a Mumbai l suburban train rammed into a hydraulic buffer on platform number 3 at the Churchgate station at 11.20 a.m. on Sunday. While three of the passengers were provided first aid, two others were referred to the hospital and later discharged as no injury was reported. The first compartment of the train tilted upwards from the impact of collision with the buffers at the dead-end of the station, where suburban trains on the western line end. As per preliminary findings, the authorities said that motorman L.S. Tiwari seemed to have lost control of the locomotive as it entered the station. “He did not report any brake failure or any problem when the train stopped at Marine Lines, the penultimate station, which is just one km from Churchgate. According to his statement, he could not control the train. He did not apply the brakes at the right moment when the train entered Churchgate. Only a detailed inquiry can establish what exactly led to this incident,” Shailendra Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, Western Railways, told The Hindu. The motorman, a guard and a locomotive inspector have been suspended. Senior officers rushed to the site to monitor restoration work, a railway spokesperson said. Following the accident, local train services were badly hit as trains ran late compelling many commuters to get off the trains and take taxis.

Fencing champion Hoshiyar Singh dies after being ‘pushed off’ a train in UP; Railways assures action

Ten years after the TV show Mahabharat wrapped up, fencing was introduced in a few schools in Uttar Pradesh in 2000. Hoshiyar Singh and his siblings Munesh Kumar, Suman Singh and Bhagyashree Singh enlisted in their school at Mathura, enamoured by the “talwaarbaazi” they watched every Sunday on the TV. Hoshiyar showed early promise by winning a bronze at the National Under-17 championships in 2004 in Chennai, which had imported sophisticated scoring equipment and was the first thrust by the federation into raising standards in the sport. He specialised in the sabre event and picked up another medal at the School Games a year later

The 43-year-old engineer is a 1997-batch officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service and is pursuing PhD in MIT. Earlier, he was posted at Centre for Railway Information Systems in New Delhi.

The Caterpillar Train or C-train is a network of lightweight, elevated trains that can run at 100 kms an hour throughout the city. It can reach residential areas with even a five-metre road. The train would be supported on poles that arch and there would be seating for just 20 people. The passengers will be able to choose their destination.

"The strength of the concept is its simplicity and its practicability. Some ideas are very good on paper, but not practicable. I guess we won because ours was both," Upadhyaya told The Indian Express.

Our Indian Railway authorities had asked some of our Olympic Women's Hockey Team for alleged traveling without ticket. According to law, they don't need one as they are railway authorities themselves!

They sat on the floor of the train for sometime before the mistake was realized. How sad can it get?
