Asim Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 ^^ I think disowned not a proper word, it suggests he never wrote that, he wrote it and read himself in Govt college as for as I know but yeah later on u can say he disowned the ideology or the message there... and yes, its obvious he later on completely changed his thoughts which were against nationalism and yeah against current indian ideology as you mentioned, Although ironically Pakistan too 'in practice' have the same...

I know many people understand it ( like many in India too - especially North ) but how many have it a mother tongue ( maadri zubaan )? Asim Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 ^ Urdu as "native language" % is not huge I guess but as for as understanding, speaking, reading, writing... even class-5 kid can do this because either majority of academic course itself would be in Urdu or in case its English-medium school, Urdu still would be a compulsory subject till college... Also in my opinion Urdu as native language population would get significantly increased in 1/2 generations time because (not sure if it happens in ind too) there is a huge num % of families where in one home both urdu and native languages are spoken: kids <-> parents in Urdu parents <-> grand parents in native (punjabi, pushto etc) so obviously for next generation and this would be a huge % Urdu will become native, Although modern Urdu has a huge mix of English too while they speak, happening in Hindi too I guess but for this reason so many of local languages at risk of getting forgotten...

I was asking for first language only ( there must be many in Pak who speak Punjabi/Sindhi,etc at home but are taught Urdu in school ). Many Indians who know hindi can understand majority of Urdu - atleast the daily usage.
