HippoSucks Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 For me, a genuine all rounder is someone who could be selected in the team as a specialist batsman or bowler alone. There are very few of those around and Kallis was probably the last genuine all rounder.

Amazing all rounder for India after Kapil. Still his spot is vacant in Indian team and if he comes back with performances in Ranji, we can let go Binny. Pathan was good.Will make 20-30 runs every match and picks 2-3 wickets upfront. Hope he comes back after WC.

Temujin Khaghan Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 after reading the thread, what i understood --------- every cricket player is a potential allrounder. everyone including pujara, shami, ishanth, rohit know about their weaker skill. but they just didnt develop it. 1) a true allrounder is some one who has developed his weaker skill to such an extent that he can be picked just based on that. an allrounder is also someone whose gap b/w primary and secondary skills is very narrow. he shouldnt be a mozart in one skill and pritham in another. so sachin is an inferior utility player compared to chris cairns, whose primary and secondary are very close together. but chris cairns is an low quality allrounder... b) an utility player is someone from whom there are expectations even from his secondary/weaker skill. for example, there is expectation that irfan pathan, jadeja and ashwin will bat. likewise there is an expectation that hafeez and shoaib malik will bowl a few overs and might pick a wicket or two. so these are all utility players. they are not allrounders in the true sense. same way pollock too. kallis, sobers, hadlee are high quality utlity players. they are not like ian botham, imran, miller, dev. the windies wouldnt die if sobers didnt bowl, saffers can survive without kallis bowling but pakistan requires the batting of imran very badly, same way botham. imran botham miller dev are somewhere in the space b/w a high quality utility player and a true allrounder A TRUE ALLROUNDER NEVER PLAYED THE GAME OF CRICKET - A MYTHICAL FIGURE WHICH EVERY KID DAY DREAMS ABOUT BECOMING IN CHILDHOOD. c) then there are low quality allrounders like corey anderson, flintoff, ravi shastri same like botham - the gap b/w their primary and secondary skills are very less. there are equally good in both the skills... but it is of low quality for eg. ian botham bowling - 8/10, batting 7/10 imran bowling 9/10, batting 6/10 kallis bowling 5/10, batting 9/10 corey anderson batting 6/10, bowling 6/10 same way flintoff, chris cairns too so they are allrounders in a way but low quality... Conclusion :::ALLROUNDER HIERARCHY::: TRUE ALLROUNDER - 0 TRUE ALLROUNDER + HIGH QUALITY UTILITY PLAYER/2 = botham, imran, miller, dev HIGH QUALITY UTILITY PLAYER = sobers, kallis etc... LOW QUALITY ALLROUNDER = chris cairns, flintoff etc... LOW QUALITY UTILITY = sachin, afridi etc... ------------------------------------ what does everyone think - agree/disagree?

Would you want him coming in at 4/50? That's his role... He is not expected to score centuries, but instead get 40 off 25.. 100s don't define everybody's careers... Pakistan's most reliable batsman hasn't got an ODI hundred in over 150 innings.... #justsaying

Brainfade Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Are we only considering batting/bowling in the skill-set? What about w/ks who could get picked on their keeping or batting alone? Would they qualify? And someone like a Jonty Rhodes whose fielding alone may be worth 20 - 30 runs.
