The guys you are referring to are all recognized as openers. They might have started at different positions, but they made their mark as an opener only. As for the all-rounder, I think we need to look away from stats as they do not always tell a lot of things and the kind of impact a player has made. I would instead have a Klusener/ Bevan/Symonds or even a Faulkner (though, he hasn't got enough matches under his belt) for their match winning ability. Klusener as a candidate to challenge Kapil seems ok .But Symonds & Faulkner ???

Their competition is the likes of Viv, Dhoni, ABDV & Kohli - all of whom are better suited than Bevan or Symonds for the middle order job. Kapil has only one contender to deal with- Klusener. Its either him or Kapil in the #7 spot. And Kapil takes it pretty easily IMO, since Kapil was an ATG ODI bowler, Klusener was never even the 2nd best bowler in his team. If the point of compiling an alltime XI is to match them up against the best, then Kapil is much more suited to the 4th pacer's job than Klusener is. Kapil is slightly behind Klusener in the batting department but not by much- Klusener scored a bit more runs on average than Kapil but Kapil did it at a better clip, which matters when you are a #7 and expected to face probably 15-20 balls on average.

Where will you get such a flexible player?[/quote'] In his prime, Aaqib Javed was a very quick and hard bowler to play against too. So what ? Zulu is pretty flexible, but so is Kapil, who also has batted in many different positions. In bowling Kapil has a very significant edge- Kapil was one of the top 5 bowlers in the 80s, Zulu as i said, was never even top 2 in his own team. Kapil was an ATG ODI bowler, Zulu, a good one but not a feasome one.

My friend I am not saying Kapil is a lesser player. But when we look from the overall balance perspective, you got to have good finishers in the team. People like Klusener give you tremendous flexibility; they can open the batting, and play right up to No. 10 slot and still get the job done for you. Isn't that amazing? A simple google search for best finishers; and you see Klusener and Bevan in almost every list, in fact, most people will rate Bevan as the greatest finisher the game has ever seen.
