swatpulla Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 One of my Bodo friends recently told me about benefits of consuming insects, and after some internet research, I found that even UN has urged people to take up this highly nutritious yet inexpensive diet. I love this idea for a variety of reasons and am seriously considering going for it. But I don't know where to get them from in Delhi. If anyone knows a good place to buy dried insects and larvae, please let me know. Thanks.

Detonator Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 I used to eat ants when I was little. I thought it's good for eye
swatpulla Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 I used to eat ants when I was little. I thought it's good for eye I bet it was good for eyes. They are full of not just proteins but quality minerals and vitamins too. If we adopt this tribal diet, not only will Indians be healtheir (consequently better looking) but it will make sure that people don't die of hunger. We have no shortage of insects and they can be farmed for nothing costs. One insect produces thousands of eggs ! :yay:

Eating 1 or 2 Insects can be a good minimal supplement , that's it. If you eat 200 ants for breakfast, you will die of formic acid poisoning.

Grasshoppers, crickets, earthworms or larvae contain no such threats and can be consumed in large quantities. They are staple diet in many parts of the world. I mentioned ants becauae you talked about it. They obviously are not suitable when consumed in large quantities.

gslv Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Spirullina is a vegan health supplement that contains all essential amino acids in requisite proportions. Many people of India will prefer it than eating an ant.
swatpulla Posted May 12, 2015 Author Posted May 12, 2015 Silkworms ! Those look good, not as nasty as I thought. I'll update the thread with some pics or video once I can get them.

gslv Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 ^^you must have tried the dried variant. There are also raw that can be done a fish tank in the terrace or near a window inside the home. I have heard the raw is not that smelly. I gulp down a spoonful of it everyday. My friend had a acne problem . After consuming spirullina he got respite from it. May be the higher vitamin A may be protecting him from it. And it can really can solve malnutrition problem in India if it can be incorporated in mid day meal scheme.
Cricketics Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 I think when I was 6-7 year old, i used to steal chalk from class room's chalk box and used to eat it. I used to spit it right away as I would tealize after 2 seconds of eating that it might be dangerous to eat, so instead of then going back to put the chalk back in the box, i would use it to make my white p.t shoes clean so that I do not get fine from school.
