1. OK. Still, it is too many matches for a Tier-2 city in a small period ( even considering from 2008 ) 2. I remember the first "first class match" between visiting Australia vs Mumbai that was scheduled in Hyd got canceled as ground was unfit/not ready. Not sure about "Test Class" but it might be a factor. As for Hyd being "in line" , I don't see it in the current schedule. Hopefully the new BCCI leadership will do the needful and keep up their promise of reviving the rotation policy. http://indianexpress.com/article/sports/cricket/bcci-to-go-back-to-rotation-policy/ 3. We can agree to differ. A WI Test match that gets over in 3 days is not same as a potential Epic match with Aus/SA/Eng for me.
1. I don't like Nagpur either. Don't remember it getting big crowds, didn't Tendulkar achieve a major landmark in Nagpur only to be greeted by a sparse crowd? Agree it was favored considering Nagpur was home to the then BCCI prez Shashank Manohar. In fact, 3 out of the 4 tests it hosted were between 2008-11 (when Manohar was on) - and it actually hosted 2 tests one year - 2010. 2. I got this from Cricinfo - Hyderabad was given 'test ground' status by ICC and BCCI in June 2010 only. http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-new-zealand-2010/content/story/477051.html 3. Not that I completely disagree on your point. But generally shouldn't such "big" matches be anyways reserved for the bigger test centers?

i thinkly rightly or wrongly hyderabad is seen as in unsexy place
I hope you are referring to in a cricketing sense. Assuming that way, it is true and this is due to years of misgovernance at HCA - they looted a lot and were always on the wrong side of people that matter. There are still no stands for majority of spectators in Hyd ground and it is too much to expect people to burn in hot Hyd Sun. Honestly, till the time the stands are properly covered from elements - I am OK with no Tests in Hyderabad - You simply cannot expect people to burn in Hyd heat and turnout will be low. However, D/N ODIs and T20s see good turnout and no reason why we should not get a good chunk of them.

Its not just a cricketing sense. Its all things. (as i said rightly or wrongly I am not one to judge) English press always moan when they are not given Delhi Mumbai and Eden gardens (they love Eden gardens) Chennai. Maybe they dont know about Hyderabad its hard to say. They did throw a tantrum for the ODIs as well. Did not like travelling to places like Jamshedpur. If it was upto me i would keep test cricket to the southern centres where the public come to support.

It was the Ganguly retirement test .One of greats of India was retiring and we had empty stands almost everywhere That Sachin record was in Mohali. He became world record run getter and most stands were empty .

I agree there should be only 5 -6 test grounds in India .Chennai Bangalore Mumbai Eden Delhi and possibly Kanpur But we also particular home season for tests to crowds as like Aussies have with Boxing day . We could easily make Pongal holidays in January as regular test time for Chennai for ex. That could also help generate interest in tests .

This will be a good topic for CC section of how cities are perceived ( not necessarily facts but perception ). Quick things on Hyd perception ------------------------------------------- - Name is the first thing. If we had renamed Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar(am) in the change-name craze period, it would have made some difference. Hyderabad - with the "Hyder" and "abad" part invokes certain perceptions - again right or wrong - I will not judge. Look at Srinagar - compare demography there and Hyd. Still perception of Srinagar is different , well because it is "Sri" "nagar". - The things it is famous for - again same thing - whenever you see Charminar, Hyderabadi Biryani - a stereotype is re-inforced though current day Hyderabad is way more than the miniscule that gets stereotyped. However - I still don't agree fully on the unsexy part. Many IT giants from across world have set shop here, Hyd is the Pharma capital of India, Hyd is the Infra capital of India ( search where all your IVRCL, Nagarjuna constructions and many others are based ), many major PSUs like BHEL, GSI, NIN, DRDO, NRSA, HAL,etc have major operations here, infrastructure is top class ( by Indian standards ), world class airport, Metro opening shortly - so there are many that feel it is "sexy" enough to invest. However, this is a good topic on perceptions of Indian cities by Indians themselves - dont care much on what Eng press thinks TBH

I don't agree with this Test elitism criteria, this exclusivity and elitist agenda has seen England losing fans to football and needing to import foreigners for their team, the present rotation system should be followed as its gives fair chance to different parts of this huge country. Thank goodness such elitist idea wont survive inside BCCI as they will lose votes and lose the future elections if anyone dare try such stunt.

I will definitely support the idea of one Home Test every year in Chennai during Pongal. It has one of the best crowds and time is also good from a weather perspective... Just don't expect ODIs, T20s also - there are other cities in India too :--D

see the problem is that England usually travel with a large Barmy Army support. Many of them want to "tick India of their list". So they prefer the major cities. I doubt its anything to do with the name. Cant speak for australia. will be interesting. How many tests Hyderabad has hosted for England or Aus.

The name stuff was in response when you said it is not just cricketing sense and overall "unsexy" :two_thumbs_up: On cricket :- Does Eng or Aus even consider what is comfortable for Indian fans to travel to or Indian population in the cities where matches are held? Why should we even bother about Barmy Army? If they have to come, they come. Else, tough luck. Can BCCI say - No test in Lords ECB - we have already seen London - now host the match in Glasgow? Our fans want to cover all of UK? p.s. Hyd hosted an Ind-Aus Test in 2013 http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-australia-2013/engine/current/match/598813.html

i agree kalia. unfortunatly thats just the way it is atm i come from mumbai and love the city. but lets be frank test matches are poorly attendend

IMO - There should be 3 tiers for Tests Tier 1 : Kolkata,Mumbai,Chennai,Delhi, Tier 2 : Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad Tier 3 : Mohali, Nagpur, Kanpur Split can be 50:30:20 over a period of say 5 years considering tours and weather in different parts of country in different months, ODIs already awarded, etc.
Good suggestion Kalia , we need people like you running BCCI :winky:

ECB has too much a say as to where we must host matches when they tour here. BCCI is powerful in name only, always bend over backwards to please the ECB folk. We never dictate to them as to where they should host matches when we tour them. Result they always get a match in Mumbai where they have an excellent record :((. Next time they tour here we must host them in Chennai,Delhi(our fortress),Hyderabad and Ahmedabad/Kanpur !!! forget the frigging rotation policy for once.

How does a Tier 3 City /Town like Nagpur keeps getting matches alloted on a regular basis? that too test matches. imo Tests should be alloted only to Mohali, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore. again they have ignored the northeast. could have alloted a match to Guwahati.
I would actually leave Mohali and Hyd out as test venues . only Mumbai , Bangalore , Kolkatta , Chennai and Delhi get good crowds for Tests , so at least the big teams should only be hosted in these Cities

1. Nagpur hosted first match in 2008 ( when the stadium was built) and 5 already and now scheduled to host 1 more. 2. 3 in Hyderabad includes 1 that was supposed to be in Kanpur but due to the ground not being ready, it was shifted to Hyderabad at last minute. Hyd new ground was built in 2004. 3. Which stadiums get key games like matches against Aus/SA/ENG also matters. SL/NZ/WI are relatively low key. Would be interesting to see ODI split ( where we need to differentiate between India matches/non-India matches as we hosted WC, Champions Trophy,Asia cup,etc ). CI does not allow download of data
are you really serious about Bangalore being Tier two ? in Recent years Bangalore has probabay got the best crowds for test matches . The Tier should not be based on Population , Metro/or not etc .

Look the truth is in the past few years crowds have turned up mostly at Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. all these three must feature prominantly on India's test allocation. Like say on average atleast 1 test per year. You can rotate the remaining tests among other centres. Mohali and Mumbai have **** attendance. Eden Delhi i think is so so. So why not just play where the people come to watch? If i am correct even India A matches have sold out in Banglalore (not sure on this, maybe some local can say for sure). Chennai from what i remember in the 90s has always had a healthy turn out.

The Tier should not be based on Population ' date=' Metro/or not etc .[/quote'] Well, Hyd had massive crows for a NZ Test match too. It is all relative. Depends a lot on opposition, how much time has passed from the previous Test match, etc. The top 4 are much bettwer ( though recent Test crowds in Mumbai were disappointing ) As I said, this is just a Test match guideline. Depending on ODIs and T20s being allocated, Test match schedule in centres can be tweaked. Also, where do we get official attendance stats? Unlike Aus, BCCI dont seem to keep a record of attendance :banghead:

Am not talking about one or two matches , I have attended test matches in 4 cities in last 6-7 years . Bangalore has the liveliest crowd for Test matches and near sold out more often . Even if you increase the frequency of matches the crowd is unlikely to dwindle . Mumbai is another city you will draw large crowds generally , So will Chennai . These are 3 cities which will be top on my list . Kolkotta just cos of Eden Gardens and the history . tbh Delhi and Hyd would be at par . Ahmedabad , Nagpur & Mohali are a BIG no. Then again its my personal opinion .

The problem with Nagpur as mentioned earlier is that nobody shows up to watch the Test there. Heck maybe ODI/T20 might not get full house either. When the Test is played in empty ground....it almost certainly produces very boring Test match as even the players are not interested (they get a feeling of such games as televised 1st class games). When the ground is atleast semi to half full the crowd gets involved and make the players realize that this is it...& makes the match much more exciting at anytime

^^ just to clarify.....I am not blaming Nagpur fans or fans of other cities. IMO...where the cricket stadiums are accessible the fans shows up....eg don't know about other but Eden Gardens is located in the heart of the city & after the match is over transport is available at walking distance. This is a big factor when fans decide to go to the stadium to enjoy a game
