Shastri to Lose Top Dollar BCCI Deal to Foreign Coach? When India cricket team director Ravi Shastri and his support staff of Bharathi Arun, R Sridhar and Sanjay Bangar left for Bangladesh, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) had informed them that they would sign a permanent deal soon. It would be a long-term arrangement and Shastri, along with his three support staff will be with the team for two years. Since then, the team has toured Zimbabwe, and on Monday, will depart for Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series, though no one has signed a contract with the BCCI. The reasons are as yet not known, but sources indicate that there might be a change in the coaching staff. What is also intriguing is that Shastri, who is now part of the expert panel of the Sky Sports commentary team for the Ashes, will join the team only a day ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka on August 12. It’s true that they (team director and support staff) have not been offered a contract as yet,” confirmed a highly-placed BCCI official. If board sources are to be believed, Daniel Vettori, Justin Langer and Tom Moody are in contention for the post of a head coach. With Shastri’s future not clear, the board is not keen on handing the contracts to the three assistants. But at least two of them are likely to continue even if a new coach is appointed. Just before the Zimbabwe tour, the board was set to make Shastri the highest-paid cricket coach, with a `7 crore-a-year contract. The former India captain then chose to skip the tour, citing commentary commitments. The other three were set to sign a two-year contract before leaving for Harare, but the move was put on hold. Before boarding the flight to Dhaka, Shastri even hinted that he might be staying ‘a little longer than expected’. But a top board official confirmed Shastri’s high salary might have been one of the reasons that caused the BCCI to develop cold feet. “`7 crore is too high a salary and even some of the board’s financial committee members felt so,” the official said. “There is a possibility that Shastri might not continue after the Sri Lanka series. Even if he does, it won’t be on a permanent basis. So, with his future not clear, we don’t want to give new contracts to the other three without the consent of the newcomer,” the official said. The whole scenario changed after the trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman was included in a high-level cricket advisory committee of the board. Apparently, Ganguly, who too had shown interest in coaching the team, felt it would be better if a foreigner is selected as coach. Why is India's hunt for coach always in a mess? In 2007, Graham Ford turned down and in 2011 post Gary Kirsten, for lack of alternatives, Duncan Fletcher got the job..and now again it seems to drag on

I think job of Indian Coach is very demanding. Team India is always traveling. Far too many games crammed in far too many places in a given calendar. While Indian players can put with such kind of work culture, A foreign coach cant last long.
