Not everyone can get themselves to plunge a knife into someone's flesh.

Most Americans live in small towns/ rural areas spread over a big area with sometimes a huge distance between two houses/farms. In case there is a crime/ wild animal attack in such places, it might be impossible for the police/ambulance to reach you in a reasonable time. So an average American needs to have those guns to defend himself and his family. The problem is not the availability of guns themselves, but what kind of guns are available here. If you are talking about a hunting rifle or revolver-kinda guns meant for self-defense, nobody should have a problem. The issue is the large scale availability of military grade weapons - fully automatic ones which are capable of firing multiple bullet rounds within few seconds. Another issue is lack of strict control in background checks - basically anybody can walk into certain gun-shops and buy a gun, without a proper evaluation of his past criminal record and his mental health - something which ought to be strictly looked into. But unfortunately the powerful NRA (gun lobby) does not want any changes in back-ground check nor the kind of weapons available in the market as they fear that will reduce the sales of guns. And they are powerful enough to fund politicians and change election results so nobody dare go against them.
