Kalia_Test Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 (edited) http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/story/927319.htmlPepsiCo India, the title sponsor of the IPL, is set to terminate its five-year contract with the league two years ahead of schedule. The decision, understood to be linked to the negative publicity enveloping the tournament following the 2013 corruption scandal, will be the first major setback in terms of perception for Shashank Manohar, the new BCCI president, who was elected largely because of his clean image. It was reported that PepsiCo was considering such an exit soon after the Lodha panel announced a two-year suspension for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in July. While there has been no confirmation from PepsiCo yet - the beverage giant's representatives could not be reached by ESPNcricinfo for a comment - it is understood that the company has sent the termination notice to BCCI and IPL authorities. It remains to be seen if the IPL, in its most tumultuous phase, attracts a new sponsor that could match the price that was being paid by PepsiCo. For now, even the number of teams that will participate in IPL 2016 is uncertain, with Super Kings having challenged their suspension in the court, and the BCCI still having the power to exercise its right to terminate the franchise agreement of both Super Kings and Royals.PepsiCo will be the second corporate house to end its association with IPL as a title sponsors. DLF India did not renew its association after the expiry of its five-season deal following the first five editions of the league. Hmmm...Will BCCI be able to find another title sponsor willing to pump hundreds of crores considering the current state of IPL? Edited October 9, 2015 by Kalia_Test typo
amiret Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 from toi :The beverage giant is keen to walk out on the five-year title contract, due to expire in 2017, because of the cash-rich league bringing "disrepute" to the game. IPL has brought the game into disrepute ?
Kalia_Test Posted October 9, 2015 Author Posted October 9, 2015 So no more Dhoni Lays Chips and Kohli Lays chips I guess
CoverDrive Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 FMCG companies are anyway not the top marketing spenders now. watch any channels and most of the ads are about mobile, mobile apps. e-commerce site, mobile service providers etc. soft drinks etc. are no longer the things that define the cool with the young generation. Next sponsor will be one among Airtel, Micromax, Samsung, FLipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, Ola etc.
G_B_ Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 hardly crumbling I think sky in the uk paid something like £10 million a year for IPL. Which works out to be more than Pepsi. (i could be wrong with exact figues but it was substaincial)
Debutant Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Lol at people predicting the demise of IPL. Suck it haters IPL will keep getting bigger and better and haterz will keep crying
Malcolm Merlyn Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 The joint statement says they are negotiating.
Ironhide Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Pepsi cannot walk away unilaterally from the contract, there will be some exit clause and penalty amount, it will be settled by Pepsi by paying that penalty amount. It is a good opportunity for any of the local Indian companies to get Title sponsorship for cheap, the number of teams will be expanded to 10 teams after the 2 years of suspension of CSK and RR, so should be a good value for any new sponsor.
amiret Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Pepsi wanted to withdraw last season :“Last season, Pepsi wanted to withdraw, especially in the aftermath of the spot-fixing case but the BCCI managed to convince it to stick on for another year. However, this time it was firm that it will not continue its association with the IPL, more so after the Lodha Committee recommended the suspension of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. The conflict of interest issues also had an impact,” said an IPL source.
King Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 They will find another sponsor, no big deal. Probably for bigger money too. I can understand why though, there are other sports that are also now live on TV through which these brands can associate. I hear the Indians now aren't just struck to watching cricket, they watch football, hockey, kabbadi and the likes? Not entirely sure but when we do visit India I see there are a lots of sports covered on TV including NBA which are followed in decent numbers. Going by the media I thought badminton and Table Tennis has gained fair bit of pubilicity in the recent years. There are some superstars in the Indian setup in other sports as well? Not entirely sure but sounds like India now just doesn't associate only with cricket which is probably good in the long run. Believe it or not Kabbadi league is live on Sky Sports in NZ and strangely it seems it has good viewership in NZ. CG 1
CG Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 (edited) Yes you have leagues for all major competition nowadays .Be it Badminton ,Tennis,Football ,kabbadi. They get good viewership and Air Time on News Channels.Earlier it used to be only Cricket .Ipl Still attracts most attention but International matches get limited coverage on media compared to early 2000s. New guy Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 No one's fault except BCCI's They were given enough chances to do something. Instead they kept on having meetings after meetings and kept on giving clean chits to everyone around. Even the initial suspension of Srini was by SC. Even now they have not learnt the lesson and keep patting each others back. At this rate the SC might as well take over them
Malcolm Merlyn Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 I have my doubts if Pepsi will actually pull out.
