randomGuy
When teams enter playoffs, 3rd and 4th teams have to win 3 consecutive matches Means the probability of winning is 0.5*0.5*0.5=0.125 So chances of 3rd and 4tn ranked team = 12.5% Chances of 1st and 2nd ranked team = 37.5% So top 2 teams have 3 times more chance. Right?

Which is why the 50 over world cup will always be considered the main prize. T20 by its nature is a lottery. Knockout tournaments further randomise the outcome. The IPL is no different despite being played over far more games. Actually it's even more random. But you are utterly missing the point. Unlike the IPL, the T20 world cup doesn't pretend to be a competitive league or some marathon of cricketing endeavour. The IPL is a knock out. The first 10-12 (this year it was worse than that) games played by each team have virtually no bearing on who wins it (except perhaps to establish the 2 minnows propping up the table). I get that it's entertaining for the youth of India who have little else to latch onto in sport. They are still being conned they just don't know it. At least fans of WWE know what the deal is. Right? Congratulations you have proven my point. The IPL is more about probabilities than sporting prowess. That's the hypothesis, and the evidence fits. New guy
Well the lesser the overs a cricket match has, the more the probability of one or two performances changing the game as opposed to a sustained team effort like in a test. So even the weaker team has more chances of winning and therefore the spread of winners will be more. Why is this so surprising?
PBN
what exactly is the IPL 'con'? The 2011 WC that India won was also about 'win 3 matches win the cup'? IPL unlike the football leagues have a relatively fixed salary cap and the teams choose out of the same auction pool. So in the end, the teams are more or less balanced and this is even shown in the table. Also, the seasons are a lot shorter than say the football or the american leagues. Furthermore, in t20 or even in 50 it takes just one or 2 players to tilt the course of the match with either a superb spell of bowling or batting. Fewer overs, Fewer teams, fewer matches, and all teams are relatively balanced which yields a tight points table at the end of the season. Is it really that surprising?
