Why is Rahane still in the T20 team?

Especially in the middle order? What exactly is Rahane supposed to do coming in at 4 or 5 in a T20 or an odi? The only position which Rahane can play in shorter formats is as an opener and with emergence of KL Rahul that option is gone as well. I would have guys like Manish Pandey or Kedar Jadhav batting at 4 or 5 in shorter formats. And as for Binny how he makes it to the Indian team beats me and how he's considered a better option than someone like Hardik Pandya will always remain a mystery to me.

Indian cricket survives despite the stone age management approach of BCCI

At every level of cricket the BCCI is a follower, always been others who have been innovative and lead

As an Indian cricket fan it hurts to see such a lackadaisical attitude from BCCI. It's almost like they don't really care about the result of intl match or series. If you are not interested then either don't play the series or send an u-19/A team but the intl team should consist of the best players. There will always be debate on who should be in the team but it's fair to say Rahane and Binny are not the top 11  T20 players in India.

West Indies already got 100 in 9 overs

I don't see a single power hitter in India XI,

our lower order is Rahane, Dhoni, Ashwin, Binny, Jadeja,.  Lol

these guys can't a string together a couple of sixes in IPL, what are they gonna do at international level:facepalm:

Rahane has done very well in the last 2 IPLs.   He averages around 46 with SR of around 129 in  28 games.  That is very good indeed.

He should open the batting though.

Rahane is good in IPL but not good enough to take apart intl bowlers. Also he can only play as an opener and in a high scoring match he's pretty much useless.

Selectors should have backed Pandya and explored options for hitters in lower middle order which is our Achilles heel. Likes of Rahane and Binny are not the answer.

The bowling  attack of many IPL teams are better than many international teams including WI.

lol, :cantstop: Not good enough for international level,

That SR needs to be closer 140 in IPL. Rahane's batting (he opened) was one of the reasons India get KO in World T20 SF vs WI.

Selectors now shunt him down the order! when there are so many better options in lower order power hitting dept.

Team management has lost the plot in today's T20 starting XI.

You only have to see Rahane bat to figure out he's not an option in shorter formats. Even when set he can't take the bowling apart and is good if the batting lineup is filled with hitters so he can bat around the lineup. Likes of Raina, Pandya, Jadhav and Pandey are better than him in shorter formats.

In T20s the mindset should be to select a team than can score 180-200 and in odis the target should be 300-320. Rahane simply doesn't fit in the lineup which will get you there.

How many top order batters have SR of 140 in the IPL  ?  Kohli has SR  of 130 and Rohit  has SR  of 131 .

Again it's not simply about stats. You only have to watch Rahane bat to see the complete picture. Rahane relies on his batting partner to go after the bowling and he goes along at barely a run a ball. In between he will target a pretty poor bowler but more or less he doesn't take apart the bowling the way Rohit and Kohli do. You can't see Rahane chase a total around 200 but would back Kohli and Rohit to do so if they are set in the middle.

I have seen him bat almost every innings.  He can play fluent strokes early on....hit lots of 4s and even a few 6s.

His problem is as a slogger in the lower order...and telling him to bat at no.4 is foolish.  He should open if he is in the team.

i m not sure overall records, but i m sure last IPL season Kohli and Rohit were higher than 130.

Rahane struggles to go past 130, and we have LK Rahul and Rohit opening anyway, so why play a third opener

His problem is he's only good for getting you totals in the range of 140-160 with an unbeaten 50. Times have changed and in T20 you are expected to clear the ropes regularly. Rahane can't do so and we already have better options in batting through the innings in Kohli and Pandey.

130 SR is ok for an opener. The great stroke-maker Dhawan has a SR of 121 in the IPL.

But, I agree....Rahul and Rohit is a good opening pair.....problem is, the selectors have not chosen any good middle order big hitters in this team and now we are forced to choose Rahane at no.4 because of poor team selection for this tour.

Problem is...Pandey is not in the team and we have not selected any lower-middle order big hitter.  What options do we have in this chosen 14.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. The very fact likes of Rahane and Binny are in a 14 man squad is the real cause for concern. If selectors can't see than Binny is not cut out for intl cricket or that Rahane is Ramprakash of IPL we have a huge issue. Likes of Raina and Pandya are much better options as they can hit big but somehow aren't in the squad.
