Vijay has never been consistent at all. Yes, he does score runs here and there, but he never set any series on fire till now and that is the reason he averages 39.  Not even at home, apart from that Aus series in 2012 where he scored 400 plus runs though did have a decent SA series. This year, he is averaging 30.

Yes, he averages around 40 as you posted, but that is what has been the standard of good opening batsman, recently. Other than Warner and Sehwag, not many openers have averaged more than that. Even if you look at Gambhir, he averages 42. Shikdhar Dhawan is around same as Vijay.

An opener with vijays technique and temperament is rare. We should give him enough time to get back into form.

May be he is not cautious enough in home matches compared to overseas.

Openers tend to have lower avgs than middle order bats in general. But, I agree that he's too inconsistent

Saha vs Rishabh-debatable-Best keeper available(however his overall skills may be) vs an exciting prodigy

Rohit vs Nair-No brainer-Rohit

Rohit vs Pandya/Jayant-again should this be even debated-Rohit all the way

Now Rohit vs Nair is actually a no brainer- A guy who has scored a 300 cant be benched , forget rohit Nair has put other batsman spot in bother in case we play 5 bowlers. Incase of 6 batsman, Nair also can bowl a bit.

Add to that in Indian conditions how do u Bench Jayant who avgs 58 in the series with bat and is brilliant options as 5th bowler. The guys has foxed n hurried a batsman like Root and will get better & better as bowler. Also the consistency and maturity he has shown with bat.

Pappu patel has given Indian team a package for overseas- 2nd keeper and backup opener , he actually gives u an option of 2 players at once.

2. Rohit vs Nair- Again things can change damn quick.

As i said few weeks back things can change real quick. If ur arent consistent and doesnt make fulll use of Opportunity  (dhawan, Rohit) one day people like Nair & rahul will get a chance n break the door and grab the opp which those havent been able to . Soon the Same would happen to Mishra and if we are lucky to find good fast bowlers who knws it may happen with Ishant, Umesh, Aaron, Bhuvi.
