But yeah, he's clearly a thinking cricketer.  And definitely not short on ambition.  The thought has crossed my mind often when listening to him, what happens a couple of years down the road, when Kohli hits a slump or starts to fade a bit.  Will Ash push for Captaincy?  Or will he end up waiting like Kumble, being the TINA candidate.  (There is no alternative).    

 

We definitely don't want to end up like South Africa - where the "star" player wants to be captain, and is just OK at it, while clearly a better alternative exists.  We've been fairly lucky the last 10 15 years, the internal politics of the team haven't escalated to a point where it becomes an issue.  There's no law that says Team India will always be like that.

Ashwin is very ambitious and I certainly can seen him trying to push for captaincy, but only if there is a clear vacancy. Kohli is younger, has a slightly lesser workload in Tests (does not have to bat and bowl), and therefore could be captain for a long time. But, in principle, there is always a remote possibility that it shapes into a Kapil-Sunny dynamic with star allrounder-star batsman.

Seriously?  There's this well-meaning sheik Chilly who keeps boasting about his "cricketing acumen", repeatedly blowing smoke up his own ***, no matter how many times his words come back to haunt him.

Ashwin might be a great captain in the short term because he's tactically well informed but in the long term he'd cause standards to slip across the country down to the developmental level by setting a bad example because he's overweight, unathletic and a poor fielder- one of the main reasons I like kohli the captain because he has following traits: hardest trainer, fittest player, most passionate and ambitious team member - he inspires players in to adopt good, professional habits

My grandad used to tell me those sheikh chilly stories. Wow thank you for reminding me about those. Haven't heard them forever.
