DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand's first state-of-the-art international cricket stadium, built at an estimated cost of Rs 237 crore and spread over an area of 23 acre, will be inaugurated on December 16.

 


The swanky stadium is located amidst picturesque surroundings in Raipur area of Dehradun and has a seating capacity for 25,000 people, along with flood lights facility for conducting matches during the night.

 


On the opening day, some of the country's leading cricketing stars -- Suresh Raina, Piyush Chawala and Praveen Kumar-- will be seen in action during a friendly inaugural twenty-20 match between Uttar Pradesh Ranji team and the Uttarakhand team at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

 



A cultural event has also been planned on the occasion. Singer Abhijeet Sawant will enthral the audience with his songs.
 

State's sports minister Dinesh Agarwal made this announcement at a press conference here on Tuesday.

 


The seats inside the stadium have been arranged in such a manner that it gives a look of 'aipan', a traditional Kumaoni art.

 


Significantly, the east stand of the stadium has been proposed to be named after MS Dhoni, who hails from Uttarakhand.

 


"There are 34 corporate boxes in the stadium along with dedicated lounge and restaurant area. A club house has also been built on the south pavilion side of the stadium which will have swimming pool, bowling alley, billiards room, gymnasium, banquet hall and 100-seater auditorium," said Agarwal.

 
 

According to sports department officials, the stadium's roof has been made by mixing tensile fabric and poly-carbonate, a first in the country.
 
 
 

"To match international standards, the stadium has five main pitches and additional five practice pitches," sports secretary Sailesh Bagoli said.
 
 
 

The sports minister also pointed out that the cricket stadium has been built by state's own resources.
 
 
 

"We did not take even a single penny from either the Central government or corporate for financing the construction of the stadium," claimed Agarwal.

DEHRADUN: Everything in cricket revolves around the pitch and Dayanand Sharma, the unassuming pitch curator of Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, is well aware of his tough job of keeping "all happy" by making sporting pitches suited for all-- spinners, fast bowlers and batsmen.



Ahead of the state's first international cricket stadium inauguration on Friday, the 51-year-old curator is the man of the moment as the pitch he has made would be put to test during the inaugural match between Uttar Pradesh Ranji team and the Uttarakhand team.

However, the Bangalore resident is not nervous before the game as he told TOI: "I never get nervous as I am confident of my work. I gave my sweat and blood in making the world class pitches in the stadium and I am sure the players are going to love bowling and batting on it."

Wearing a brown trouser, a half-sleeve shirt along with a sleeveless jacket, the BCCI-certified international curator is as enthusiastic as a budding player eager to do well in a match.
 

Sharma, along with his staff of five men, has put eight inch of black cotton soil on the upper layer of the pitch to provide a much needed bounce.

 

 


"The main pitch is a green wicket as I have left 2.5mm grass on it which will definitely help fast bowlers during the inaugural match. This does not mean that it will not help the batsmen. It is a balanced wicket," the pitch curator told TOI.

 

 

 

Sharma has previously worked at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru for ten years and even helped in making pitches in international cricket stadia in Kerala and Goa.
 

 

 

In Dehradun, he has made ten pitches including five main centre pitches and rest five for practice.
 

 

 

Pointing out the features of the ground at Dehradun, the curator said: "Even in case of rain, the ground would be ready for match within one hour of the shower. There is a web like network of perforated drainage system beneath the grass so that water never stays on the ground. Even the outfield is sand-based which helps in absorption of water."
