MUZAFFARPUR: Railway minister Lalu Prasad landed, quite literally, in trouble when the IAF helicopter carrying him touched down on NH-28 near Manihari village between Muzaffarpur and Samastipur, creating panic among people who ran helter-skelter on seeing the chopper alight. A complaint was filed in the court of chief judicial magistrate Sanjay Kumar on Thursday by advocate Sudhir Ojha, who is also a stringer with a local daily and a member of Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party. Ojha claimed that he and a few others were injured when the chopper landed without warning on the highway, creating avoidable panic. The Union minister — along with his ministerial and party colleague Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and RJD general secretary Shyam Rajak — was on an aerial survey of flood-hit districts of north Bihar. The court has directed Muzaffarpur SP Sanjay Ratan to investigate the matter and submit a report within a week on how the IAF helicopter landed on the highway without permission from the local administration. Ojha, who is vice-president of the district unit of LJP, says he was riding a motorcycle when the helicopter suddenly landed on the highway.

Boy survives six hours at night lost in Dead Sea JERUSALEM (AP) -- An 8-year-old Israeli boy spent six hours floating in the Dead Sea alone at night after his father left him there by accident during a family trip, police said Sunday. They said they would not press charges against the errant parent. The Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth and one of Israel's most popular tourist attractions, has an abnormally high salt concentration that allows swimmers to float on the surface. Rescue workers said the boy, Shneur Zalman Friedman, from Jerusalem, was in the sea with his father and two brothers on Thursday evening when currents swept him away from shore, without anyone else noticing. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the family was part of a large group visiting a beach reserved for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men -- who do not bathe in the presence of women -- away from main public areas. His father left the water with other members of the group and only noticed the boy was missing as darkness fell, Rosenfeld said. A major search by police helicopters and volunteers in motorboats finally found Shneur about 2 miles from the shore early Friday after six hours in the strong-smelling, corrosive water, Yehuda Meshi-Zahav of the Zaka rescue organization said. The boy was dehydrated and frightened but otherwise healthy, he said. Shneur told his rescuers he remained calm throughout the ordeal, saying prayers and thinking about his school friends as he floated in the darkness. "The boy said that he didn't try to swim, he just drifted with the current," Rosenfeld said. The mineral-laden waters of the Dead Sea helped keep the boy afloat but could have choked him had he panicked and swallowed large quantities, said Omer Cohen of the Megilot volunteer rescue unit. After hours of fruitless searching, workers had all but given up hope of finding the boy alive. "We thought we were looking for a body," Cohen said. "We were surprised to find the boy alive and well." http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/08/05/deadsea.boy.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

Homeowner arrested after the burglar he confronted falls 30ft by JAYA NARAIN - More by this author » Last updated at 21:06pm on 8th August 2007 A homeowner was arrested after a burglar plunged from the balcony of his top-floor flat. The intruder suffered head injuries and is fighting for his life after falling around 30ft on to a concrete path. Later police arrested the owner and are investigating whether the intruder was pushed. The incident happened early on Monday when Patrick Walsh, 56, awoke to find the 43-year-old man rifling through his flat. They argued and the confrontation moved towards the rear window of the flat. BurglarFallJMS_468x568.jpg The burglar fell from this third floor window It is believed the intruder then smashed the window and clambered out on to a narrow ledge and fell to the ground. Mr Walsh phoned police and at around 6.30am officers found the man on the ground outside the smart Victorian apartment block in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. Officers arrested Mr Walsh on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and are trying to establish whether the intruder was forced out of the window. The arrest is expected to fuel arguments about the rights of householders to defend themselves against burglars. walshDM0808_228x359.jpgUnder suspicion: Patrick Walsh yesterday The issue has been high on the law and order agenda since farmer Tony Martin was jailed for shooting dead a burglar in 1999. Following the Martin affair the Crown Prosecution Service and the Association of Chief Police Officers said any householder can use reasonable force to protect themselves or others, or to carry out an arrest or to prevent crime. Yesterday Mr Walsh, who was given bail pending further inquiries, refused to speak about the incident. But his solicitor Victor Wozny said: "My client is not at liberty to say anything because he is under police bail. "However we appreciate that the public view might be that this is a man arrested in his own home defending his own property." A neighbour said: "Police arrived in what seemed to be minutes and were there for the whole day. "It's shocking to find out what has happened but people shouldn't break into other people's houses." Another resident said: "I presume we will have to respect the burglar's rights while his victim has the nightmare of court hanging over his head. It all seems so unfair." A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said they had been called following reports that an intruder had fallen from a top-floor flat. A 56-year-old man had woken up to find a man in his flat. "Following an exchange of words, the alleged burglar was found unconscious on the pavement outside the flat. "It is believed that he had fallen from the fourth-floor window." He said the man is 43 and lives locally and inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Mr Walsh was later released on bail until November. If charged and convicted he could face a life sentence. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=474025&in_page_id=1770

Fair dinkum! Aussie lingo sparks security scare

Jano Gibson August 10, 2007 - 3:10PM Strewth. Crikey. Bloody hell. An Australian woman has reportedly sparked a security scare aboard a US flight after her use of a common Australian phrase was apparently misinterpreted as an act of aggression. Sophie Reynolds, 41, from Queanbeyan, was flying aboard SkyWest Airlines from Atlanta to Pittsburgh this week when she asked a flight attendant if she could have a pack of pretzels instead of crackers. "[The flight attendant] said they didn't have any [pretzels], and I said, 'Fair dinkum,' out of frustration," Reynolds was quoted as saying in the The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Before she knew it a second flight attendant asked her for her passport and copied down her name. Then, when the flight landed, three uniformed officers greeted her. "They said, 'You swore at the hostess and there are federal rules against that,"' Reynolds said. "And I said, 'I did not swear at the hostess, I just said 'fair dinkum."' A spokeswoman for the airline said it was not simply a matter of misunderstanding the language. "We witnessed aggressive behaviour throughout the flight," she said. Reynolds was not charged and allowed to go on her way, she said.

WTF... He attended a function at 11 PM and the flags were still flying. So there is a protest aginast him and not the organisers..This is all to jump-start somebody's political career. They should be nipped in the bud... Indore’s Youth Congress wants to file a court case against Khan for dishonouring the Indian national flag AAMIR2208.jpgBlacked Out: Aamir KhanAfter his stint as an activist for the Narmada Bachao Andolan, it seems Aamir Khan has once again landed in a soup with political parties. This time though, it’s for no fault of his. On August 16, Khan attended an event for Toyota Innova (he is the brand ambassador) in Indore. The next day, when he was returning to Mumbai, 20 Congress party workers accosted him at the airport for allegedly dishonouring the national flag! Flying high Apparently, the Indian national flag had been hoisted at the gates of Rajpal Motors showroom in Indore, where the event was held. The Congress party workers have taken offence to the fact that the flags were allowed to fly even post sundown, violating the Indian Penal Code. According to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act (1971) of the IPC, the national flag cannot continue to fly post sundown. Indore Youth Congress President Devendra Singh says, “Aamir Khan came to attend an event at Rajpal Motors on the night on August 16. Our flag continued to fly at the showroom’s gates till 11 pm, even though the Constitution states that it cannot fly post sunset. This is an insult to national honour. Aamir was present there but didn’t say anything. So as a protest, 20 Youth Congress workers went to the airport the next day with black flags and waved them in front of him. Aamir didn’t say anything, but we were arrested.” Singh adds that the Youth Congress even registered an FIR against the showroom’s owner Rakesh Rajpal on August 17. He says, “We want a case registered against Aamir Khan too, as he was present there. We have a video of the entire event and will register a complaint against him in court, if necessary.” Isn’t that unnecessarily harsh? After all, it’s possible Aamir wasn’t aware of the violation. But Singh says, “May be Aamir does not know the laws of the land, but he is such a big star and needs to be more responsible. Even children know the significance of the national flag and how not to disrespect it.” But I’m patriotic Both Aamir Khan and Rakesh Rajpal were unavailable for comment. However, Indore-based distributor Aditya Choksi says, “Aamir would never knowingly insult the national flag. He is extremely patriotic and has always stood for the rights of the individual.”
