This ensures they have 6 bowling options. Nabi, Miraz, and Parag are not comparable to Sundar in T20Is. He's taller, his T20I economy is below 7, and a regular offpspinner experienced. He's limited on the batting, which India already has a lot of.

They will need to develop their game further, India has the best resources in IPL for that. These are 2 of the 4 genuine top-order batsman in India.

Sure, everything about Kohli is right. Shubman and Jaiswal should’ve nailed there spots earlier, but so has been the preferential treatment.

The T20 WC team is great example of two all-format batsman opening the batting and making the most out the powerplay. If they keep the winning XI, then Shubman and Jaiswal logically replace the retired greats. The winning team has so many all-format players, there have no incentive to change that template.

@deepdynamo Gill is VC for the WC. That is a very big position to have and says a lot about the future. Only if they chose to split T20, then Axar will become captain. Anyway, Jurel, Sundar, and NKR are already in the T20 setup. Jaiswal will come in, and Gill if he is captain. Eventually, Bumrah, and a few IPL up-comers like Arshad Khan and Umran Malik will be selected. There will be no space for century merchants like Tilak, Abhishek, and Sanju, and mystery spinners like Varun and Bishnoi in the T20 setup.

Left-handers have a tough time getting away off-spinners. Varun Chakravarthy is a glorified off-spinner as well. Might as well have a tall one. Sundar is a underrated bowler if used properly. His batting is anyways negligible.

But Riyan Parag is a pervert.

Your first point goes against a general risk-reward policy. If you were a company, would you favour a customer who buys only one product, or one who buys multiple products? The one who buys multiple has more skin the game. From BCCI's POV, investing on a multi-skilled or multi-format player is a better risk/reward compared to a T20 specialist. Ergo, Virat Kohli > Ankit Bawne/Rahul Tewatia. Then, from a player's point of view too, he would love to play all games for India. The second point is what I mentioned Rinku Singh, Kamindu Mendis, Travis Head, and the more famous, Virat Kohli of 2016 for. In red-hot form, they aced all formats. From such a large pool of players, India can afford to find the 11 in-form or potentially formidable players who can ply for the BCCI year-round. In short, for each format anyone can pick 11 best Ranji performers of the year and make a Ranji 11, but we have Irani Trophy for that. Ankit Bawne, Paras Dogra, Kedar Jadhav, if it was format-specific 20 others would be in contention for a spot in Test team as well. That's why Shubman Gill plays above them.

Even if he is played as a pure bowler, it is worth it. There are no tall off-spinners like him and at his accurate best he is super economical. He still needs to improve his fielding though. The main question is the third bowling option. In the upcoming T20 WC, Bumrah and Arshdeep will be there. Will the third bowling option go to Varun, Bishnoi, or Rana? If it goes to Rana, they will have only one spin bowling option, Axar Patel. Then, they will need an additional spin bowling all-rounder, which is Sundar.

@deepdynamo The impetus behind having format specific teams just reads 'impossible'. BCCI being one oragnisation will not want to have one coach managing so many different players. Imagine GG 30-40 different players...the situation will be something akin to Bangladeshs or Delhi. Instead, the idea is those players who are in great form and are able to maintain that form and fitness all-year round. These 'runs'...think of Rinku Singh, Kamindu Mendis, Travis Head, and at one time our greats like Rohit and Kohli. I think you should think in the opposite direction and realise that the format-specific player was always the hunch. Pujara and Rahane as Test-specialists and limited-over specialist like Kedar Jadhav and Manish Pandey, they have all been underwhelming. Same with the whole wicketkeeper situation; nobody can get their head around any WK selection (Sanju Samson). Other point is really that India doesn't have split captaincy permanently. And one captain usually means one team across the formats.

They have to groom him to become good na, he didn't just become a great Test player. He will have to work on his powergame a bit, but they should play him. There are no tall-offspinners like him after Ashwin. Him and Axar are a given.

From what I know, India doesn’t have split captains for long. And Abhishek is not Test material, so it’s going to be Gill only. It depends on where the WK position is, if it’s in the middle order and Jaiswal replaces Samson then surely Jurel in the middle order.

Rinku Singh and Arshdeep are stars. Gill is going to be the next all-format captain, and Axar Patel is already VC, he is not going anywhere. The wicket-keeper in the middle-order will be Jurel.

If India makes a team for each format, like you are thinking, then they can probably choose from 20-30 good players in the IPL, and in all formats, that number goes to 40 considering players from Ranji Trophy. It is better for them to manage fewer players who play for India in all formats. Whoever is good in T20 from the BGT team and CT team will play T20s and they will have only one captain, Gill. None of the players you mentioned have forte in other formats so eventually they won't be picked in T20s. IPL is not the only criteria for T20, and is only one of the criteria for ODI and Test. In short, Tilak, Abhishek, Sanju Samson, Dube, Parag, Ramandeep and the mystery spinners won't play in IT20s. The main point is there are very few, in-form all format players, while there are several one-format specialists who may or may not be long-term investments in branding and mgmt. That is why we don't see Ankit Bawne in Tests, for e.g.

In fact, both of them should replaced because Bumrah eventually comes in. So Arshdeep, Harshit and Bumrah instead of our spinners. Idea is to hunt in pairs and they can do it like the spinners are. They work for T20s but will fail in ODIs n Tests and so having one team across formats is crucial for players to represent India year round.

I disagree and Dhoni has mentioned that India should have one captain. If Gill is the captain, then what sense does it make to have Abhi and Sanju open. Gambhir has mentioned that all-format players are crucial and so Gill and Jaiswal should open. They need a solid opening pair in SENA for all formats.
