Short Interaction with Venkatesh Prasad about 1996 WC with Pakistan and much more

Shri venkatesh prasad visited our work place for attending meet. I would like to share some of the interaction that we had with him. Firstly prasad looks taller than any body i have seen and looks lot younger at first glance some of my colleague who dont know about anything about him  thought he was in age bracket of 25-30 years. but he is 47 currently. Now some of the questions that were asked

Q1.what happened in that match in WC 1996 ? what did aamir sohail say to him in that match ? and did he play against him again.

He started explaining how our team had scored some 280 odd runs and pakistan had already scored 100 for the loss of only one wicket and he was under pressure aamir sohail after hitting a boundary   told him he will hit  the  der again  now venkatesh prasad was explaining to us that this is pressure situation that everyone faces in life and we need to learn to face them,

sohail may be telling he will hit der but he might bluff hit the boundary elsewhere so it is important to know what is your strength and bowl that accordingly rather than guessing what others will do to u. He said that he bowled accordingly to his strength and it got him a wicket. He said he did not meet him aamir sohail until 2003 WC were he was doing commentary and he felt that aamir sohail still holds the grudges against him.

Q2. why Indian bowlers are not good at reverse swing like some of the legends like waqar, akram ?

For this he did not name anyone but he said that reverse swing is not correct. It cannot be done ethically the so called legend may have become legends by doing certain things with the balls which i would not like to say.

He felt that reverse swings happens without doing much to the ball only in in some cricket ground like chennai, mumbai were heat is more and he did not feel it is right for our bowlers to do this since it involves doing certain things with the ball which is not right in his opinion.

Q3 some questions were asked about fast bowler in India first thing  that came from his mouth  after so many year we have got some good fast bowler who can bowl @ 140s  that is ïshant sharma :frown: :crazy:and  he called umesh as Fast medium bowler who can bowl 145 plus. He said in 22 yards pitch batsman does not get enough time to judge which way the ball is going when ball is bowled at 145 plus so batsman have to pre-mediate /out think bowler to have any chance of playing those fast delivery.

Q4: Any funny things in the dressing rooms that happened during his days.

He said that in those days cricketer were told to give baggage one day before for sending it to airport for check-in and one player give all his cloths and came out in his towels next day but it was too late luggage was already sent to airport and he ended up borrowing some other player`s trouser. He did not name the player who did this . He called sindhu as Weather man and Srinath as a guy with good humour.

Q5.Some participants told him about the last ball six hit by Javed Miandad off chetain sharma and how the team kept losing after that.

For this he said  pakistan won lot of matches after that game team morale was down and it had hit a  mental block that they would lose match to pakistan because it is was a friday.  He boasted that after his wicket off Aamir sohail things started to change  and we started wining more against pakistan.

Do u agree with the some of the points he has put forward. I was 6 when WC 1996 happened so I cannot comment on this. Do u think we started wining more against pakistan after WC 1996 ? Do u concur with prasad view on Reverse Swing?

Condition of the ball matters a lot for reverse swing, and its a gray area of how and how much a team can "work" on the ball.  I think Prasad has a bit of sour grapes syndrome because the know-how to do this and awareness about how effective it can be wasn't there with Indian bowlers when he played.

I think Prasad from his perspective is overstating the role of the 96 win a bit.  But that's understandable.  Its one of those memorable youtube moments in the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry history.

Not very sure how Venky could give incorrect info. Venky and Sohail played against each other in various matches after 96 and in almost all those matches, Venky had the better of him. I think just after 96, they played against each other in singer cup.
