India A on brink of huge defeat after collapse - signs of things to come?

The point is majority of U-19 players will never successful get into senior team. Look at stars like Unmund Chand or Menaria. There are some exceptions like Kohli whom build upon their U-19 career. And then some players like Dhawan whom failed at beginning but eventually got in the team later due to IPL/domestic cricket.

You are right that majority of the u-19 players fade away, but A tours are quite different from u19.   And A tours have gotten a lot more 'serious' in the last 3-5 years.   They are the finishing school for Indian prospects and are rightly followed closely.   These tours are going to be the building blocks for the future accomplishments of the Indian team.  The likes of Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer will be better and more confident players if and when they start touring with the national team.

You will see 3 types of selections in A tours - a handful of 'raw' prospects thrown in to see whether they can make the jump to higher levels quickly (Mohammed Siraj, Ishan Kishan) , a bunch of young consistent FC performers who are knocking on the doors to national selection (Manish Pandey, Karun Nair, Shreyas Iyer), and a few spots doled out to old seasoned FC pros who have put up good numbers and will get an A tour spot as a 'reward', even though they have no genuine shot at getting to Team India.   (Shahbaz Nadeem - the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Uthappa have gone on A tours in this role as well)   Also a spot or 2 for the quota selections for political purposes - that Bannerjee fella is an example of this in the current A squad.  No reason for  to a mid-level prospect, with pedestrian FC numbers, to make it into the A team other than the fact that Bengal and the East zone don't have that many top prospects, and Ganguly has some serious 'pull' in the BCCI now.

Sudeep Chatterjee actually is not that bad a selection. Don't go just by numbers because he does not get to play on flat pitches in Kolkata. Eden has produced some really bowling friendly pitches in recent years. Average of 41 is pretty good keeping that in mind.

Please don't make Eden Gardens sound like its Perth or Sabina Park from the 1970s and 80s.   Agree that the pitch has been relaid recently is not a flat track, but that doesn't make Sudeep into a that much of a better prospect than what his numbers reflect.   Good players score runs - especially in their home conditions at the FC level.  Besides, last year's entire Ranji season was played away from home - so he had ample opportunity to score big runs, and didn't.

He's a political quota selection - and I don't think its the worst thing in the world, because East zone Ranji teams hardly have any representation in such teams, and at a minimum, he will get exposed to top level training and preparation methods - and he might even have a bit of talent that can potentially blossom given some opportunity.  So its not the worst thing in the world to spread a bit of opportunity around - bit unfair to to the likes of Ishank Jaggi etc, but not criminally so in the context of things.  Thoda regional balancing theek hai.

Check the FC records of SA players that played in this A series and check their averages, not many average over 40. Why? because of the conditions they play in. You probably haven't watched Eden in domestic cricket. I have. Regarding Perth, Perth has been seriously overrated. Yes, it was fast and bouncy but that is it. Its the movement off the pitch or in the air that create problem for international batsmen more than pace and bounce and Perth lacked that. Regarding East Zone quota selection, Ishan Kishan was already there.

yup, sabina park was up and down with portions of the top soil disintegrating  rather that pace and bounce, perth used to have massive cracks and the ball went off that ,once they fixed it, it became pretty flat.

and those cracks at Perth wouldn't open before day 4-5. Regarding Sabina, It has been a two-paced sluggish pitch with variable bounce. Only quick pitch in WI was Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Remember that T20 match in 2009 against Australia. We were blown away by pace and bounce.

How many games did Sudeep Chaterjee play away from the fast bowlers paradise and the batsmen's hell-hole that is Lahli - sorry Eden Gardens - last year?   How did he perform on the other "flat tracks"?   I can understand the desire to stick to your guns, but come on now.

I was at the ground for the 2010 T20 match against Australia, and yes it was definitely on the quicker side, but that's not what cost us the game.  It was the winning total that we let the Aussies set on the board that did us in.
