Most importantly they need to improve their catching especially at slip.

This.  Our shoddy slip catching could allow a possible 40-3 turn into a 100-1.  Fast bowlers are tired and demoralized and then it is a completely different ball game.

BATSMEN

1.  They should look to leave most deliveries clearly outside the off-stump and leave all deliveries that are out of their reach.
2.  There is no point in defending high bouncing deliveries on or outside the off-stump. Unless an attacking shot is tried, just leave the delivery.
3.  Basically  .... leaving a lot of deliveries would be the key.
4.  Get set before trying adventurous shots.
5.  Cut down lofted shots.
6.  Basically, practice and try to avoid all the bad habits that creep in while playing LOIs.

Vijay and Kohli  out to balls that could have been left alone .....  Dhawan tried a lofted shot unnecessarily

Scorecard may give impression that Indian bowlers are attacking a lot as SA is 94-6 now, but they have been successful with completely different strategy. Bowling everything  on good length outside off. Not trying too many things or any extra strategy with any batsmen.

They leaked lot of runs in first inning. With current strategy they have been able to dry up runs and producing wicket taking deliveries in between those.

Greate effort. Whoever suggested them to just remain consistent and not to try too many things, did a great job. They are yet to deviate from plan. Kohli's captaincy has been brilliant in the field today.

This is why this is potentially the best bowling lineup for us. Discipline and consistency.
