In tests and T20Is he has done better than Kohli had done till same age, but whereas Kohli was backed by Dhoni, Rahul got dropped in both format.

 

5% you say? KL Rahul had better stats than Kohli that too as opener in same number of matches when Kohli showed him door in SA. Rahul had best stats among Indian player in T20s when they dropped him earlier. 

 

Kohli was 90% of Rahul in both these format, yet he became captain.
