panesarv Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 The cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that appeared in a Danish newspaper last year have found their way on to YouTube, and this has caused the country of Pakistan to decide to block access to the popular site. Islamic religious law says that no one may make a visual representation of Mohammaed, and when cartoons appeared in a Danish newspaper a year ago that showed his turban replaced by a bomb, Muslims rioted in offense. With a year having passed, newspapers decided to run the cartoons again to discuss what happened, setting off a whole new round of problems. According to the Thaindian News, the offending cartoons have now found their way on to YouTube, prompting Pakistan’s government to call for all ISPs to block access to the site due to â€the ratio of non-Islamic objectionable videos has increased on itâ€. YouTube is not the only site of late to run into problems with depictions of Mohammed. Wikipedia has received over 180,000 complaints in regards to two images on their site that clearly show the Prophet’s face. Barring full removal of the images, complainants have requested that the two images at least be altered to blur his face. Thus far Wikipedia has stood firm that they will not alter the images as they are a neutral source of information, and some factions of Islam do not have a problem with the Prophet’s face being shown. Blocking YouTube has become a bit of a sport, with an increasing number of countries participating. Now how will all those young P akis - the kind unfortunate enough to follow cricket in this decade when Pakistan have been shyte - reminisce about the days of the ultra-phast bollers Wasim, Waqar and Imran ?? I guess they will just have to settle for Iftikhar Anjum on TV.

Pakistani ISP tried to block access to Youtube and ended up blocking the whole country from internet access :giggle: On Sunday, YouTube became unreachable from most, if not all, of the Internet. No "sorry we're down" or cutesy kitten-with-screwdriver page, nothing. What happened was that packets sent to YouTube were flowing to Pakistan. Which was curious, because the Pakistan government had just instituted a ban on the popular video sharing site. What apparently happened is that Pakistan Telecom routed the address block that YouTube's servers are in to a "black hole" as a simple measure to filter access to the service. However, this routing information escaped from Pakistan Telecom to its ISP PCCW in Hong Kong, which propagated the route to the rest of the world. So any packets for YouTube would end up in Pakistan Telecom's black hole instead. The first repercussion was that YouTube disappeared from the Internet for almost an hour. I suspect the second repercussion was that Pakistan’s Internet access crawled to a halt as all of a sudden they were handling IP requests for one of the busiest sites in the world. As of this writing YouTube has announced more granular routes so that at least in the US they supercede the routes announced by PieNet. The rest of the world is still struggling. So, while working on a fix that will filter out the spurious route announcements, PCCW has found it necessary to shut down Pakistan’s Internet access. Put the cartoons on a few more websites and Pakistan will ban internet altogether. 2. Send a postcard to someone and they will ban postal services. 3. Carry it on an aircraft and they will ban air services. 4. Put it in the middle of Islamabad and they will nuke themselves.
