Jonny Bairstow was returned gloves of his late father by an Australian who handed it back to him when he was in Australia. Bairstow was very emotional and appreciated the fan who returned the gloves. Fans may consider these as pointless but there are many such occasions which are highly appreciated by the players. If it helps players motivate there is nothing wrong about it. There is no harm here.
