Indian batting does not inspire any confidence. This is just awful batting by openers what are they waiting for, they should go all out attack but this prodding and poking will lead them to nowhere.

they need practice,a much better bowling attack will be waiting for them in a few months/

So these openers are not long term options.Agarwal who looked good in Australia has looked very iffy on this tour.

he made a 50 just one innings ago in more challenging conditions than today. Mayank should play for a few more tests at the least. KLR should go. Time to bring in panchal, easwaran and gill.

I am not saying Mayank needs to be dropped now but he is almost 29 not sure he is there for long haul.I want Gill to play as opener vs SA.

hussey was 29 and an opener in FC as well. gill is probably going to play in middle order going by A matches. too many domestic openers around: gill, shaw, panchal, easwaran as well as discards like dhawan, vijay.

How many tests did Hussey play, do you think Mayank is in that class.Once he started his decline he was out that is what happens when you are old.

why ask a rhetorical question? he played nearly 80 tests (79). unless you expect every single player to play a 100 tests - which is quite unrealistic - playing 80 tests counts as a long and distinguished career in my book.

Mayank is probably not in Hussey's class, but he has scored mountains of runs and earned the right to a long run. he batted very well against a top attack (Oz) in home conditions. plenty of others to go after in the indian team instead of a newbie like him: KLR or rahane have flattered to deceive much more in the past 2 yrs.

even if he gives 4 years whats the harm.....he is at an age where batsman is suppose to be at his peek. Gill can be a good middle order option

No one said there is any harm, but he will not get long rope like Rahul did.He needs to score 100s soon.

Becuase you mentioned Hussey, he is nowhere near the caliber of Hussey. He will start as an opener vs SA but if he flops in that series, questions will start about him.

rahul did enough to earn a long rope.....he scored overseas...made runs in India and to be honest he also has been in n out of side

Shaw expulsion , dhawan n vijay decline also helped

Mayank if he does well till the time he hits decline will get some backing during tough phase.....but for that he needs to build the reputation

I don't think KLR did enough to earn that long rope. an avg of 35 after 35+ tests is almost like an opener from 1980s india (chetan chauhan-level). TM just persisted with him because we hadn't unearthed shaw and agarwal by then, and because dhawan and vijay were doing even more badly. now, there are plenty of backups such as gill (who can double as middle order bat), panchal and easwaran.
